Network coverage in United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has dense, reliable mobile coverage across every major city and along all motorways and main rail routes. Your Travelren UK eSIM roams on EE — BT-owned, consistently the country's top-ranked network by Opensignal — with Vodafone as a fallback. 5G is live in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol, Cardiff, Belfast, and Newcastle, with typical speeds between 80 and 200 Mbps in city centres. 4G LTE covers more than 99% of the UK population and runs along every major motorway and along the Great Western, East Coast, and West Coast mainlines. Coverage drops in the Scottish Highlands, Snowdonia, the Lake District, and remote parts of Cornwall and the North York Moors — plan for offline maps in the hills. Older London Underground deep-level lines still have patchy coverage, though the Elizabeth line and Jubilee line are fully wired.

What works in United Kingdom

✅ Works well

  • Google Maps and Citymapper — both have excellent London data
  • Uber, Bolt, and FreeNow rideshare across most UK cities
  • WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, and FaceTime over data
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay at virtually every UK retailer
  • TfL contactless — tap your phone directly on any tube, bus, Overground, Elizabeth line, DLR, or tram gate in London
  • National Rail journey planning via Trainline and the official National Rail app
  • Streaming on 5G — central London and Manchester exceed 150 Mbps routinely
  • Tap-to-pay on buses in Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff, and most UK cities

⚠️ Watch out for

  • Rural Scotland (Highlands, Isle of Skye, Outer Hebrides), Snowdonia, the Lake District, and parts of Cornwall can have weak or no signal — download offline maps before you drive
  • Older London Underground lines (parts of Northern, Central, Piccadilly, District) have limited or no mobile signal in tunnels — the Jubilee and Elizabeth lines are fully wired
  • Victorian brick buildings in older London neighbourhoods can have weak indoor signal — WiFi is widely available
  • A small number of UK banking and government apps require a UK phone number for SMS verification; tourist apps do not

Arriving in United Kingdom

Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (STN), Manchester (MAN), Edinburgh (EDI), and Birmingham (BHX) all offer free airport WiFi after a one-tap email sign-in. Heathrow caps free access at 45 minutes then asks you to pay; the others are typically open-ended for basic browsing. London is fully tap-to-pay — any international Visa, Mastercard, or Amex contactless card, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay, works directly at every TfL gate (tube, bus, Overground, Elizabeth line, DLR, tram). There is no need to buy an Oyster card. Daily and weekly caps apply automatically when you tap the same card. Contactless works the same way on buses and trams in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted virtually everywhere — pubs, shops, taxis, markets. The £100 chip-and-PIN contactless limit does not apply when paying from a phone with biometric auth.

Installing your United Kingdom eSIM

1
Install on your home WiFi

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.

2
Land in United Kingdom

Install your UK eSIM at home on your own WiFi before you fly — it takes about two minutes. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your email. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Leave your home SIM as the primary line for calls and SMS. Switch the UK eSIM on for data only when you land. Your home number stays active throughout the trip. If you forget to install before departure, Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, and Edinburgh all have free airport WiFi sufficient for a two minute install.

3
Keep your home SIM for calls

Leave your home SIM in. Set the United Kingdom eSIM as your data line only. Your number stays active the whole trip.

Common questions

Which carrier does Travelren use in the UK?
Your eSIM connects to EE — the BT-owned network consistently ranked first for coverage and 5G availability by Opensignal — with Vodafone as a fallback. EE covers more than 99% of the UK population on 4G and has extensive 5G across every major city. Your phone selects the strongest signal automatically. No APN configuration or manual network switching is required.
Will my eSIM work on the London Underground?
On the newer lines, yes. The Jubilee line and the Elizabeth line are fully wired for 4G across all stations and tunnels. Parts of the Northern, Central, Piccadilly, and District lines now have platform coverage but tunnel coverage is patchy. TfL is in the middle of a multi-year rollout to cover the whole network. WiFi is available free at most Underground station platforms — just connect to "Virgin Media WiFi".
Can I tap my phone to pay for the London Underground?
Yes — this is the standard way to pay in London now. Tap your phone or contactless card directly on any tube, bus, Overground, Elizabeth line, DLR, or tram gate. There is no need for an Oyster card. Daily and weekly caps apply automatically when you tap the same card repeatedly. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and any international contactless Visa, Mastercard, or Amex all work.
Does the UK support eSIM?
Yes. EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three all support eSIM. iPhones from the XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy models all work. Important exception: iPhones purchased in mainland China do not include eSIM hardware even if the model number looks identical. Use travelren.com/device-check to confirm your phone in 30 seconds. Check my device →
Can I use my eSIM at Heathrow and other UK airports?
Yes. Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham all have strong EE and Vodafone coverage throughout terminals, baggage claim, and ground transport. Your eSIM activates the moment your phone connects to a UK network — usually while taxiing to the gate. Most travellers are online before reaching the Border Force queue.
How much does roaming cost without a Travelren eSIM?
Telstra charges AUD$10 per day under its International Day Pass for the UK (Zone 1) with a 2 GB daily cap. AT&T's International Day Pass is USD$12 per day. Spark NZ's 14 day Roaming Pack is NZD$30. One NZ charges NZD$10 per day. Travelren plans are typically cheaper on a per-day basis and don't reset at a fixed midnight cutover that can shorten your final day. Check my device →
Will my eSIM work in rural Scotland and Wales?
Along main roads and in towns, yes. In the remote Highlands, Outer Hebrides, Snowdonia, and the Lake District, expect patchy or no signal — EE has the best rural UK reach but no carrier covers every mountain valley. Download offline maps on Google Maps or the OS Maps app before driving north of Inverness or into the interior of any UK national park.
Is free WiFi at Heathrow and other UK airports any good?
It works for basic browsing, but Heathrow caps free access at 45 minutes and then asks you to pay. Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, and Edinburgh offer longer free sessions after a one-tap email sign-in. Speeds are adequate for messaging and a hotel lookup but slow for anything heavier. For reliable connectivity on arrival, install your Travelren eSIM before you fly.
