Network coverage in Switzerland

Switzerland is unusually well covered for a mountainous country: expect 5G across Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Lausanne and Lucerne, and reliable 4G LTE through the valleys, along the entire rail network, and in the major alpine resorts including Zermatt, St Moritz, Interlaken, Grindelwald and Verbier. The rail coverage is the part travellers notice — Swiss trains hold signal through most of their route, including long tunnels on the main corridors. Where it genuinely thins is high alpine terrain: above the treeline on hiking routes, in remote side valleys, on glaciers, and on some cable-car ascents you will drop to nothing until you reach the top station.

⚠️ Watch out for

High alpine terrain is the real gap. Above the treeline, in remote side valleys, on glaciers and partway up some cable cars, expect no signal on any network. Download offline maps before hiking.
Data-only. No local voice calls or SMS on the eSIM line, so keep your home SIM active if you need a bank OTP or expect to ring a mountain hut.
Does NOT cover Liechtenstein, Italy, France, Germany or Austria despite how close they are. Border towns are easy to wander across — check a regional Europe plan if your trip crosses.
Some deep rail tunnels and the older postal-bus routes over high passes still drop out briefly.

Arriving in Switzerland

Zurich and Geneva airports both have free WiFi, and both put you on a train into the city centre within about ten minutes, so you can land and get moving before an eSIM matters. The Swiss Travel Pass or a half-fare card is usually worth the money if you are moving between cities, and SBB Mobile handles tickets, live platform changes and connections — it is genuinely essential and it needs data. Switzerland is close to cashless: contactless works on trains, in mountain restaurants and at most kiosks, though a few alpine huts remain cash-only. English is widely spoken in cities and tourist areas. If you are hiking, download offline maps and check the weather bulletin before you set out, because coverage above the treeline is the one thing you cannot rely on.

Install on your home WiFi

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.

Land in Switzerland

Install before you fly, over your home WiFi — the QR code arrives by email as soon as you buy, and installing does not start the plan. On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM and scan. On Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM. Label it "Travelren CH" so it is obvious beside your home line. Leave the Travelren line off until you land, keep your home SIM as default for calls and texts, then enable data roaming on the Travelren line only and set it as your data line. Most Switzerland plans activate when your phone first connects to a local network rather than at install.

Which network will I be on in Switzerland?

Your Travelren Switzerland eSIM roams on Sunrise, the country's second-largest operator. Your phone connects automatically with nothing to configure. Sunrise runs 5G across the major cities and 4G LTE through the valleys, the rail network and the main alpine resorts, which covers essentially everywhere a traveller goes at ground level.

Will I have signal in the mountains?

In the resorts and valleys, yes — Zermatt, St Moritz, Interlaken, Grindelwald and Verbier are all well covered. Above the treeline is different. On hiking routes, glaciers, remote side valleys and partway up some cable cars you should expect nothing at all, on any network. Download offline maps and your route before you set out rather than relying on live navigation.

Does it work on Swiss trains?

Yes, and better than you might expect. Swiss rail holds signal through most of its route including the long tunnels on the main corridors, so you can keep using SBB Mobile for live platform and connection changes while moving. Brief dropouts still happen in the deepest tunnels and on some high mountain passes, but the main network is reliable.

Does my Switzerland plan cover Italy, France or Germany?

No. Switzerland is not in the EU and this is a single-country plan, so it stops at the border — including Liechtenstein. Swiss border regions make it very easy to cross without noticing, especially around Basel and Geneva. If your trip takes in neighbouring countries, choose a regional Europe plan that lists them all rather than assuming proximity means coverage.

How much data do I need for a Switzerland trip?

Less than you would think, because Switzerland is compact and hotel WiFi is universally good. A week of trains, maps, SBB Mobile and messaging is comfortable on 3GB. Two weeks with photo backup and some streaming suits 5GB. Go to 10GB if you are hotspotting a laptop or working from the road.

Will it work as soon as I land in Zurich or Geneva?

Yes, provided you installed the eSIM before flying. Install over your home WiFi, leave the line off, then enable data roaming on the Travelren line after landing. Both airports have strong coverage and most people are connected before they reach the train platform. Both also have free WiFi as a fallback.

Is Switzerland expensive for data compared to roaming?

Roaming is where Switzerland gets expensive, not the eSIM. Because it sits outside the EU, several carriers treat it as a non-EU destination and charge accordingly, and Australian and American day passes apply their standard international rate. A Travelren plan is a fixed cost for the whole trip regardless of how many days you use it.

Can I make phone calls with it?

Not on the eSIM line — Travelren Switzerland plans are data-only, with no local number, voice or SMS. Use WhatsApp or FaceTime over the data connection instead. Keep your home SIM active alongside it if you need to receive SMS verification codes or ring a mountain hut to confirm a booking.
