Network coverage in South Korea
South Korea has the fastest and most uniformly excellent mobile network in the world. Your Travelren Korea eSIM roams on KT with SK Telecom as a fallback — two of the three national carriers, both running standalone (SA) 5G across every major city. Active 5G availability sits above 90% nationwide, and Opensignal consistently ranks Korean networks first globally for download speed, with typical 5G speeds between 200 and 500 Mbps in Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Jeju. 4G LTE blankets the entire peninsula including KTX bullet train corridors, the Seoul Metro deep-level lines, and even the Ulleungdo and Jeju ferry routes. Mountain interiors in Seoraksan, Jirisan, and Hallasan can have brief signal dips on hiking trails, but coverage at major trailheads and resort towns is solid. You will rarely notice a gap.
What works in South Korea
✅ Works well
- KakaoTalk and KakaoMap — the default messenger and map app for Korea
- Naver Map for transit, walking, and driving directions (more accurate than Google Maps in Korea)
- KakaoT for taxis — accepts international Visa and Mastercard
- Coupang Eats and Baemin (배달의민족) for food delivery
- Papago for Korean translation — better than Google Translate for Korean
- Streaming on 5G SA — speeds in central Seoul regularly exceed 400 Mbps
- Free public WiFi as a supplementary option in subway stations, buses, cafes, parks, and government buildings
- Apple Pay on Hyundai Card NFC terminals at major retailers, convenience stores, and Seoul Metro gates (Mastercard from April 2026)
⚠️ Watch out for
- Google Maps cannot give turn-by-turn driving directions in Korea — South Korea restricts export of detailed mapping data, so use Naver Map or KakaoMap for driving (walking and transit on Google Maps work fine)
- Phones bought in Korea before late 2022 may not have eSIM hardware — Korean carriers only legally supported eSIM from September 2022, so older locked Korean handsets are SIM-only. Visit travelren.com/device-check before you buy
- Apple Pay acceptance is widening but still patchy outside Hyundai Card NFC terminals — keep a backup contactless Visa or Mastercard for older shops
- A handful of Korean apps (banking, government services, some delivery platforms) require a local Korean phone number for SMS verification; none are tourist essentials
Arriving in South Korea
Incheon (ICN) and Gimpo (GMP) both offer free unlimited WiFi throughout the terminals — Incheon's NAVER Free WiFi runs at solid speeds and has been free since 2008. SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ all operate 24-hour tourist SIM and eSIM kiosks in the arrivals halls of Incheon Terminals 1 and 2; data-only tourist SIMs start around ₩27,500 (roughly AUD$30) for 5 days unlimited. The T-money card is essential for subway, bus, and most taxis — buy one at any convenience store or station kiosk for ₩3,000 and top up with cash or card. From April 2026, Mastercard holders can register their card in Apple Pay and tap directly on Seoul Metro Line 1 to 8 gates. KakaoT is the dominant taxi app and accepts international Visa and Mastercard. Outside Hyundai Card NFC terminals, Apple Pay coverage is patchy — keep a backup contactless card.
Installing your South Korea eSIM
iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.
Install your South Korea eSIM at home on your own WiFi before you fly — it takes about two minutes. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your email. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Leave your home SIM as the primary line for calls and SMS. Switch the Korea eSIM on for data only when you land. One Korea-specific watchout: phones bought locally in Korea before September 2022 may not have eSIM hardware at all, even if the model name looks current. Check yours at travelren.com/device-check before you buy. Free WiFi at Incheon and Gimpo works as a fallback.
Leave your home SIM in. Set the South Korea eSIM as your data line only. Your number stays active the whole trip.
