Network coverage in Singapore
Singapore is one of the most reliably connected places on the planet for travellers. The city-state is small, dense, and saturated by three competing mobile networks — Singtel, StarHub, and M1 — all of which delivered island-wide standalone 5G population coverage by 2024 under IMDA targets. Your Travelren Singapore eSIM roams on Singtel, the largest of the three, with seamless 5G and 4G LTE from Changi Airport gate-to-gate, across the entire MRT network including underground tunnels and platforms, throughout Marina Bay, Sentosa Island, Orchard Road, Chinatown, Little India, the CBD, Jewel Changi, and Universal Studios Singapore. Indoor coverage in shopping malls, hotels, and hawker centres is consistently strong. There are essentially no rural dead zones in Singapore — the entire island is roughly 50 km east-to-west and built up end-to-end. Speeds in central districts on 5G regularly exceed 300 Mbps.
What works in Singapore
✅ Works well
- Google Maps and Citymapper turn-by-turn navigation across the entire MRT, bus, and road network
- Tap-to-pay on the MRT and public buses via SimplyGo — Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, or any contactless Visa, Mastercard, or Amex works directly at gates and bus readers (no EZ-Link or stored-value card required for adults since 1 June 2024)
- Grab and Gojek for rideshare, food delivery, and parcel — both operate fleet-wide across the island
- WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime, and iMessage over data — WhatsApp and Telegram are the default for hawker stall owners, drivers, and tour operators
- Booking food via foodpanda, Deliveroo, GrabFood, and Chope (restaurant reservations)
- PayLah, GrabPay, and NETS QR scan-to-pay at hawker centres, kopitiams, wet markets, and small shops that historically only took cash
- Streaming on 5G across the island — Singapore consistently ranks top-3 globally for fixed and mobile speeds
- Klook, GetYourGuide, and Trip.com for Universal Studios, Gardens by the Bay, S.E.A. Aquarium, and Night Safari ticketing
⚠️ Watch out for
- Indoor 5G can briefly fall back to 4G LTE in older HDB blocks, deep basement carparks, and the lowest levels of some shopping malls — speeds are still strong on 4G
- Singapore-issued banking and government apps (DBS digibank, OCBC, UOB TMRW, Singpass) typically require a Singapore-registered phone number for two-factor SMS — none are tourist essentials, but Singpass is increasingly used at attractions and government services
- Some prepaid local SIM kiosks at Changi require passport registration under IMDA rules — an eSIM bought before you fly skips this entirely
Arriving in Singapore
Changi Airport (SIN) is consistently ranked the world's best airport and offers free unlimited WiFi via "#WiFi@Changi" with no signup, password, or time cap — connect once and you have coverage gate-to-gate including Jewel Changi. Singtel, StarHub, and M1 prepaid SIM kiosks in arrivals (Terminals 1, 2, 3) sell tourist SIMs from around SGD 18 for 7 days of data, but Singapore law (IMDA) requires passport registration to activate any local prepaid SIM — staff scan your passport at the counter, and there's a cap of 10 prepaid SIMs per passport. An eSIM bought before you fly skips that. Singapore's public transport is the easiest tap-to-pay system in Asia: SimplyGo accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and any contactless Visa, Mastercard, or Amex card directly at MRT gates and bus readers, with no EZ-Link or stored-value top-up required for adults since 1 June 2024. The Changi Airport MRT line connects directly to the city centre in around 30 minutes for under SGD 3. Grab dominates rideshare; Gojek also operates. Cash is increasingly rare — even hawker centres now widely accept PayLah, GrabPay, and NETS QR scan-to-pay. Cards and Apple Pay are universal at hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and most retail.
Installing your Singapore eSIM
iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.
Install your Singapore eSIM at home on your own WiFi before you fly — it takes about two minutes. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your email. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Leave your home SIM as the primary line for calls and SMS. Switch the Singapore eSIM on for data only when you land. Your home number stays active throughout the trip. If you forget to install before departure, Changi Airport offers free unlimited "#WiFi@Changi" with no signup throughout all four terminals and Jewel — sufficient for a two-minute install.
Leave your home SIM in. Set the Singapore eSIM as your data line only. Your number stays active the whole trip.
