Network coverage in Qatar
Your Travelren eSIM runs on Vodafone Qatar, with 5G across Doha. Coverage is excellent in the city, including West Bay, the Corniche, Souq Waqif, the Pearl, Lusail and the metro, and at Hamad International Airport.

Beyond Doha, the main roads north to Al Khor and west towards Zekreet are covered, while the southern desert around the Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid) is patchy. One Qatar-specific point: local networks restrict voice and video calls on apps such as WhatsApp and FaceTime, so these may not connect, although messages, photos and voice notes go through. Qatar plans need their APN entered by hand as globaldata.

Arriving in Qatar
Hamad International (DOH) is one of the world's big transit hubs, and many visitors see Doha on a stopover of a day or two. The Doha Metro's Red Line runs from the airport into the city in about 20 minutes.

Qatar uses the riyal (QAR), and cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere, from malls to Souq Waqif. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way around, as distances between sights are long and summer heat makes walking hard work. Dress modestly in public places such as souqs, museums and government buildings, covering shoulders and knees. Summer temperatures often pass 40°C, so the cooler months from November to March are the most comfortable time to visit.
Installing your Qatar eSIM
Install your Qatar eSIM on WiFi before you fly by scanning the QR code from your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). Then set the APN to globaldata in the eSIM's mobile data network settings, because Qatar plans don't configure it automatically. At Hamad International, choose the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for it.

Common questions
Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Qatar?
Vodafone Qatar, with 5G across Doha. After installing, set the APN to globaldata in the eSIM's mobile data settings, or data won't start. Your order confirmation shows the APN too.
How do I set the APN for Qatar?
On iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, choose the Qatar eSIM, Mobile Data Network, then enter globaldata as the APN. On Android: open the eSIM's Access Point Names, add a new APN and type globaldata. Save and select it, then restart the phone if data doesn't start.
Do WhatsApp calls work in Qatar?
Not reliably. Qatar's networks restrict voice and video calls on apps such as WhatsApp and FaceTime, while messages, photos and voice notes go through normally. If a call won't connect, send a voice note, or call on your home number, bearing in mind your carrier's roaming charges.
Is the eSIM worth it for a stopover in Doha?
Yes. The shortest plans suit a stopover, and because the days start from your first connection in Qatar, you can install one before you fly and have data from the moment you land at Hamad.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in Qatar?
Qatar is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is a single payment for your stay.
When does my Qatar plan start?
When your phone first connects to a network in Qatar. Installing the eSIM and setting the APN at home doesn't use any days, so the plan starts when you land at Hamad.
Will I have signal on a desert safari?
Near the main roads and resorts, yes. Around the Inland Sea and in the dunes further south, signal comes and goes. Your safari operator will know the route, but download maps if you're driving yourself.
Do I need cash in Qatar?
Rarely. Cards and phone payments work in malls, restaurants, taxis and most shops, including in Souq Waqif. A little cash in riyals can help at small stalls, for tips and at some market vendors.
