Network coverage in the Maldives
Your Travelren eSIM runs on Dhiraagu, the Maldives' largest mobile network, on 4G. Dhiraagu covers Malé, Hulhumalé and the airport island, and reaches inhabited islands and many resort islands across the atolls, often with good speeds out to the water villas.

How strong it is at your resort depends on the distance to the nearest tower, so signal varies from island to island. Out at sea, on long speedboat or seaplane transfers and on dive and snorkel trips to outer reefs, coverage comes and goes. Most resorts also have WiFi, and for many guests the eSIM is the connection that keeps working at the beach, the dive centre or on a sandbank picnic.

What works in the Maldives
Works well
- Messaging your resort about your transfer from Velana airport
- Sharing photos and video calls from the beach or your villa
- Checking seaplane and domestic flight times
Show 2 more
- Guesthouse bookings and ferry times on inhabited islands
- Streaming when the resort WiFi is slow or out of reach
Watch out for
- Coverage varies by resort and atoll
- Patchy at sea during transfers and excursions
- Data costs more in the Maldives than in most destinations, so resort WiFi is worth using for big downloads
- Data only: no Maldivian number
Arriving in the Maldives
Every international visitor arrives at Velana International (MLE) on Hulhulé island, next to Malé, where resort staff meet arrivals and arrange the onward transfer by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight. Dhiraagu covers the airport, so you can message your resort before you board.

The official currency is the rufiyaa (MVR), but resorts price in US dollars and add service charge and taxes to the bill, which you'll usually settle by card at check-out. On inhabited local islands and in Malé, rufiyaa or dollars in cash are handy for small shops and cafes. Local islands follow conservative dress codes, and alcohol isn't sold there.
Installing your Maldives eSIM
Install your Maldives eSIM at home on WiFi: scan the QR code from your order email via Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM on iPhone, or through the SIM manager on Android. No APN setup is needed. When you land at Velana, switch mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line.

Keep your home SIM available for bank SMS codes, but switch its roaming off, since calls and data on it can be costly.
Common questions
Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in the Maldives?
Dhiraagu, on 4G. It's the Maldives' largest network, covering Malé, the airport and many inhabited and resort islands across the atolls. The APN sets itself, so once data roaming is on for the eSIM line, it connects automatically.
Will my eSIM work at my resort?
Most likely, but it depends on the resort. Dhiraagu reaches many resort islands, some with strong 4G right out to the water villas, while more remote atolls can have weaker signal. If connectivity matters to you, ask your resort which network covers them before you travel.
Does the eSIM work during seaplane or speedboat transfers?
For part of the journey. Near islands with towers you'll have signal, while open water between atolls can mean gaps. Expect patchy data on the way and coverage again once you arrive.
Does Telstra's International Day Pass cover the Maldives?
No. The Maldives isn't on Telstra's International Day Pass list, checked September 2026, so Telstra customers pay standard roaming rates. AT&T's International Day Pass includes the Maldives at US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is one fixed price for your stay.
Show 4 more questions
When does my Maldives plan start?
When your phone first connects to Dhiraagu in the Maldives. You can install the eSIM at home and none of its days are used until you land.
Is resort WiFi enough in the Maldives?
Often it is, but quality varies, and it may not reach the beach, the dive centre or a sandbank picnic. Your own data covers you wherever there's signal, and it's useful at the airport and during transfers before you're on the resort network.
Do I need cash in the Maldives?
Not much at a resort, where extras are charged to your room and paid by card at check-out. On local islands and in Malé, cash in rufiyaa or US dollars helps in small shops and cafes. Some guests bring small US notes for tips.
How much data do I need for a Maldives holiday?
Less than you might think if you use resort WiFi for big downloads and streaming. A few gigabytes covers messaging, photos and maps for a week; choose more if you plan to video call or share a lot of video from the beach.
