Network coverage in Hungary
Your Travelren eSIM runs on the network Hungary knew as Vodafone, which rebranded as One in January 2025, on 4G, so your phone may show either name. Coverage is excellent across Budapest, including the metro and along the Danube, and in Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and Eger.

Lake Balaton's shores, the Danube Bend towns of Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom, and the main motorways are well covered. Signal can weaken in the hills of the north, such as the Bükk and Zemplén, and on the thinly populated Great Plain away from towns. For a city break and day trips from Budapest, it works almost everywhere.

Arriving in Hungary
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International (BUD) is the main airport, about 30 minutes from the centre, and the 100E airport bus runs to Deák Ferenc tér. Hungary uses the forint (HUF), not the euro.

Cards and contactless are accepted in most restaurants and shops and on public transport, but small bars, markets and public toilets may want cash. When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose forint, as the conversion offered is usually worse. Budapest's metro, trams and buses are cheap and frequent, and the BudapestGO app sells tickets on your phone. Always validate a paper ticket before you travel, as inspectors check often.
Installing your Hungary eSIM
Install your Hungary eSIM on WiFi before your trip, scanning the QR code from your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). It sets its own APN. When you land in Budapest, make the eSIM your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it.

Don't worry if the network shows as One rather than Vodafone: it's the same network under its new name.
Common questions
Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Hungary?
The network formerly called Vodafone Hungary, now branded One, on 4G. Your phone may show either name. It's one of Hungary's main networks, with strong coverage in Budapest, around Lake Balaton and in the larger cities. The APN sets itself automatically.
Does the eSIM work in the Budapest metro?
Yes. Budapest's metro lines have mobile coverage, as do the trams and buses across the city, so you can keep navigating and messaging underground, including on the historic M1 line under Andrássy Avenue.
How much does Telstra charge to roam in Hungary?
Hungary is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is one payment for your whole trip.
When does my Hungary plan start?
When your phone first connects to a network in Hungary. Installing the eSIM at home doesn't start the clock, so you can set it up before you fly and the days begin once you land in Budapest.
Show 4 more questions
Will the eSIM work around Lake Balaton?
Yes. The towns around the lake, including Siófok, Balatonfüred, Tihany and Keszthely, have good coverage, as do the roads and rail lines along both shores.
Can I use the eSIM on a trip to Vienna or Bratislava?
No. The plan works in Hungary only and stops at the border. If you're combining Budapest with Vienna, Bratislava or Prague, buy a plan for each country or a Europe plan that lists them all.
Should I pay in forint or euros in Budapest?
Forint. Some tourist spots accept euros but at poor rates, and card terminals that offer to charge in your home currency usually add a worse conversion. Choosing forint on the card machine is almost always cheaper.
Do I need cash in Hungary?
A little. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Budapest and the larger towns, but ruin bars, market stalls, small bakeries and public toilets sometimes want forint in cash. Use bank ATMs rather than standalone tourist machines, which often charge higher fees.
