Network coverage in Macao

Your Travelren eSIM runs on Hutchison, the network behind 3 Macau, on 4G. Macao is small and densely built, so coverage is strong everywhere visitors go: the historic centre around Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul's, the casino resorts of the Cotai Strip, Taipa Village, Coloane and the ferry terminals.

Indoor coverage in the big resorts is generally good, although deep inside some casino floors and car parks it can weaken. The plan covers Macao only. Hong Kong and mainland China are separate, so a day trip across the bridge or the border needs its own plan, and your phone may try to switch networks near the Zhuhai border.

Arriving in Macao

Many visitors reach Macao from Hong Kong, either by ferry to the Outer Harbour or Taipa terminals or by shuttle bus across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, while Macau International Airport (MFM) serves direct flights. Macao uses the pataca (MOP), but Hong Kong dollars are accepted almost everywhere, usually with change given in patacas.

Cards work in hotels, casinos and larger restaurants, while small eateries and bakeries often prefer cash. The big casino resorts run free shuttle buses from the ferry terminals, border gates and between each other, and the Macao Light Rapid Transit links Taipa and Cotai. Public buses are cheap and take the Macau Pass card.

Installing your Macao eSIM

Install your Macao eSIM on WiFi before you travel, scanning the QR code from your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). It sets its own APN. When you arrive, switch mobile data to the Macao eSIM and turn on data roaming for it.

If you're coming from Hong Kong on another eSIM, switch your data line over once you've crossed.

Common questions

Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Macao?

Hutchison, the network behind 3 Macau, on 4G. It covers the whole of Macao, including the historic centre, Taipa, Cotai and Coloane. The APN is set automatically, so it connects once data roaming is on for the eSIM line.

Does the Macao eSIM work in Hong Kong?

No. Macao and Hong Kong have separate mobile networks, and this plan covers Macao only. If you're visiting both, buy a Hong Kong plan as well. It's a quick switch in your phone's settings when you cross between them.

What happens near the border with Zhuhai?

Near the border gates your phone may try to connect to a mainland Chinese network, which this plan doesn't cover. If data stops near the border, open your network settings and choose the Hutchison network manually, or move a little further into Macao.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in Macao?

Macao is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is a single payment for your stay.

When does my Macao plan start?

When your phone first connects to a network in Macao. Installing it before you travel doesn't start the clock, so you can set it up in Hong Kong or at home.

Can I pay in Hong Kong dollars in Macao?

Almost everywhere, yes. Shops, restaurants, casinos and taxis accept Hong Kong dollars, usually giving change in patacas. Patacas aren't easy to use outside Macao, so try not to leave with a lot of them.

Will I have signal inside the casino resorts?

Generally yes. The large Cotai and peninsula resorts have good indoor coverage, although it can weaken in basement car parks and deep inside some gaming floors. Resort WiFi covers most hotel rooms if you need a backup.

Is a short plan enough for a day trip from Hong Kong?

Yes. The shortest Macao plans suit a day or two, and because the days start from your first connection in Macao, you can buy and install one in Hong Kong before catching the ferry or the bridge bus.
