Network coverage in China

China has some of the densest mobile infrastructure on earth, and your Travelren China eSIM roams primarily on China Unicom with China Mobile and China Telecom as fallbacks — 5G across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xi'an and Chongqing, and strong 4G LTE along the entire high-speed rail network. The part that matters most in China is routing, not coverage: the Great Firewall blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube on local connections. Your Travelren eSIM routes traffic internationally, so it bypasses the Firewall — Google Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram all work the moment you land, with no VPN app required. That is the single difference between an eSIM built for China and a SIM bought at the airport.

What works in China

✅ Works well

  • Google Search, Maps and Gmail — all work without a VPN
  • WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger over data
  • YouTube, Spotify and Telegram streaming
  • iMessage and FaceTime on your usual number
  • Didi (China's rideshare) and Google Translate camera mode
  • WeChat and Alipay — essential for paying almost anywhere in China
  • Booking trains via Trip.com and navigating with Apple Maps

⚠️ Watch out for

  • Internationally-routed traffic adds slight latency versus a local connection — fine for browsing, maps and video, occasionally noticeable on fast-twitch gaming
  • A local Chinese SIM bought at the airport sits behind the Firewall — Google and WhatsApp will not work on it without a pre-installed VPN, so it is not a substitute
  • iPhones purchased in mainland China have no eSIM hardware even when the model number matches the global version — those phones cannot use any eSIM
  • Some Chinese super-apps (certain banking and government services) require a local phone number for SMS verification; tourist-essential apps do not

Arriving in China

China is effectively cashless — Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted almost everywhere, and both now let foreign visitors link an overseas Visa or Mastercard, so set them up before you fly. Beijing Capital (PEK/PKX), Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Guangzhou (CAN) have airport WiFi, but it often requires a Chinese number or passport scan to log in, so an eSIM that works on arrival saves real hassle. Didi is the dominant taxi app and works in English. The most important rule in China: the Apple App Store and Google Play are restricted, so download and set up everything — your eSIM, maps, translation, WhatsApp — at home before departure. Once you land with an internationally-routed eSIM, the open internet works exactly as it does at home.

Installing your China eSIM

1
Install on your home WiFi

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.

2
Land in China

Install your China eSIM at home on WiFi before you fly — this is more important for China than anywhere else, because the App Store and Google Play are restricted in the mainland and you cannot easily download or activate apps after landing. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your email. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Keep your home SIM as the primary line and switch the China eSIM on for data when you arrive. Also install WhatsApp, your maps app, a translation app, Alipay and WeChat before departure.

3
Keep your home SIM for calls

Leave your home SIM in. Set the China eSIM as your data line only. Your number stays active the whole trip.

Good to know

A few details before you buy.

Calls and SMS

Most plans are data only — use WhatsApp or FaceTime for free. Look for the phone chip plan if you need a local number.

Compatibility

Your phone must be eSIM compatible and network-unlocked. Check yours →

Refunds

If your eSIM doesn’t activate, we’ll refund you in full. No questions asked.

Common questions

Does this eSIM work with Google and WhatsApp in China?
Yes. Your Travelren China eSIM routes traffic through servers outside mainland China, which bypasses the Great Firewall. Google Search, Maps and Gmail, plus WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube all work from the moment you land — no VPN app required. This is the key difference from a local Chinese SIM, which sits behind the Firewall and blocks these services.
Do I still need a VPN with this eSIM?
No. Because the eSIM already routes internationally and bypasses the Firewall, you get open access to Google, WhatsApp and Instagram without installing a separate VPN. That matters in China, where app stores are restricted — installing a VPN after you have landed is difficult, so an eSIM that just works on arrival removes the problem entirely. Check my device →
Does it work in Hong Kong and Macau too?
The mainland China plan covers mainland China. Hong Kong and Macau have separate networks and no Firewall, so they are not part of the China-specific plan. If your trip combines mainland China with Hong Kong, Macau or other Asian countries, our Asia regional eSIM covers mainland China plus 17 countries on a single plan — see the Asia option rather than buying two eSIMs.
Which carrier does the eSIM use in China?
It connects to China Unicom as the primary network, with China Mobile and China Telecom as fallbacks. These are the three national carriers, offering 5G across major cities and 4G LTE on the high-speed rail network. Your phone selects the strongest signal automatically — no APN configuration or manual network selection is needed.
How much does roaming cost without a China eSIM?
Telstra's International Day Pass is AUD$10 per day in China and AT&T charges USD$12 per day. Both route internationally so they generally bypass the Firewall too — but a 10-day trip is AUD$100 or USD$120 just for connectivity. A Travelren China eSIM costs a fraction of that and bypasses the Firewall by design. Check my device →
Do I need to set this up before I leave home?
Yes — strongly recommended. The Apple App Store and Google Play are restricted in mainland China, so you cannot reliably download apps or scan a new eSIM once you land. Install the eSIM, plus WhatsApp, maps and translation, on your home WiFi before you fly. The eSIM then activates automatically when you arrive.
What phones are compatible?
Most modern phones support eSIM — iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer. The one China-specific exception: iPhones purchased in mainland China have no eSIM hardware, even when the model number looks identical to the global version. If your iPhone was bought in China, use travelren.com/device-check to confirm before relying on an eSIM. Check my device →
How do I pay for things in China with my phone?
China runs on Alipay and WeChat Pay — cash and foreign cards are often not accepted at smaller venues. Both apps now allow foreign visitors to link an international Visa or Mastercard. Set them up before you travel; with a working internationally-routed eSIM they function normally on arrival, including for Didi taxis, metro tickets and most shops and restaurants.
