Network coverage in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the densest and best-covered mobile markets anywhere, and your Travelren eSIM roams on HKT and 3HK, two of the four main networks. 5G reaches essentially the entire built-up territory, and the coverage most travellers actually care about is the coverage Hong Kong does unusually well: the MTR runs signal through every underground station and running tunnel, so you keep data between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui rather than losing it under the harbour. Expect strong service across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the airport and Airport Express, Victoria Peak, Lantau and the Big Buddha, and the Star Ferry crossing. Coverage thins slightly on the remoter Sai Kung and MacLehose Trail sections and on outlying islands such as Tap Mun, though even most hiking routes hold a usable signal.

⚠️ Watch out for

Does NOT cover mainland China. Crossing at Lo Wu, Futian or via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge leaves you with no service — you need a separate China plan, and note that mainland plans face the Great Firewall while this one does not.
Does NOT cover Macau. Macau is a separate telecoms jurisdiction despite the short ferry ride.
Data-only. No local voice calls or SMS on the eSIM line — keep your home SIM active if you need to receive a bank OTP.
Signal degrades on the remoter Sai Kung peninsula, the far MacLehose sections and small outlying islands.
Typhoon signal 8 and above can disrupt service alongside everything else in the city; plan around the HKO warnings rather than around your eSIM.

Arriving in Hong Kong

Hong Kong International Airport has free unlimited WiFi, so you can land and sort yourself out even before an eSIM activates — but the Airport Express reaches Central in 24 minutes and you will want data on it. Get an Octopus card immediately; it pays for the MTR, buses, ferries, convenience stores and most cheap restaurants, and it remains the single most useful object in your pocket. Contactless bank cards now work on the MTR too. The government-backed Wi-Fi.HK program puts free hotspots in libraries, parks and public buildings, though quality varies. Cash still matters at dai pai dong street stalls and in older wet markets. Unlike mainland China, you do not need a VPN — Google, WhatsApp and Western social platforms all work normally.

Installing your Hong Kong eSIM

Install on your home WiFi

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.

Land in Hong Kong

Install before you fly, over your home WiFi — the QR code arrives by email right after you buy, and installing it does not start the plan. On iPhone, Settings then Cellular then Add eSIM and scan. On Android, Settings then Network and internet then SIMs then Add eSIM. Label it "Travelren HK" so you can tell it apart from your home line. Leave the Travelren line switched off until you land, keep your home SIM as the default for calls and texts, then after landing enable data roaming on the Travelren line only and set it as your data line. Most Hong Kong plans start when your phone first connects to a local network, not at install.

Common questions

Will my Hong Kong eSIM work in mainland China?

No. Hong Kong is a separate telecoms jurisdiction, and a Hong Kong plan stops working the moment you cross at Lo Wu, Futian or over the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. If your trip includes Shenzhen, Guangzhou or anywhere else in the mainland, buy a China plan or a regional Asia plan that lists both. Check the coverage list on the plan before you buy rather than assuming proximity means inclusion.

Do I need a VPN in Hong Kong?

No. Hong Kong is outside the Great Firewall, so Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube all load normally on your eSIM. This is the single biggest practical difference between a Hong Kong trip and a mainland China trip. If you are continuing to the mainland afterwards, that leg is where you need to plan around blocked services.

Does it work on the MTR underground?

Yes. Hong Kong wired its metro for mobile signal a long time ago, and coverage runs through stations and the tunnels between them, including the harbour crossings. You can keep streaming or navigating between Central and Kowloon without dropping out. This is genuinely better than most metro systems — London and New York both still have significant tunnel gaps.

Which network will I be on?

Your Travelren Hong Kong eSIM roams on HKT and 3HK, two of the territory's four main networks. Your phone selects between them automatically based on signal, so you do not need to configure anything. Both run 5G across the built-up territory and 4G LTE everywhere else, and both have full MTR coverage.

Can I use it in Macau?

No. Macau is its own telecoms jurisdiction with its own operators, so a Hong Kong plan does not roam there even though the ferry takes under an hour. If you are doing a Hong Kong and Macau trip, either buy a separate Macau plan or choose a regional Asia plan that explicitly lists both territories in its coverage.

How much data do I need for a Hong Kong trip?

Hong Kong is compact and WiFi is everywhere, so most travellers use less than they expect. For a long weekend of maps, messaging, and photo uploads, 1GB to 3GB is usually plenty. A week of heavier use with some video streaming is comfortable on 5GB. If you are working from cafes or hotspotting a laptop, size up — 5G here is fast enough that you will get through data quickly without noticing.

Will it work when I land at the airport?

Yes, provided you installed the eSIM before you flew. Install over your home WiFi, keep the line switched off, then enable data roaming for the Travelren line after you land. Coverage at Hong Kong International Airport is strong, and most people are connected before they reach immigration. The airport also has free unlimited WiFi as a fallback if anything goes wrong.

Can I make phone calls with it?

Not on the eSIM line — Travelren Hong Kong plans are data only, with no local number, voice or SMS. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal over the data connection instead, which is what most people in Hong Kong use anyway. Keep your home SIM active alongside it if you need to receive SMS verification codes from your bank.
