Network coverage in Tanzania

Your Travelren eSIM can use Halotel and Airtel, two of Tanzania's main networks, both on 4G. Coverage is good in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Moshi, and across Zanzibar, including Stone Town and the beaches of Nungwi, Kendwa and Paje.

On the northern safari circuit, towns and many lodges have signal, while the open plains of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater floor are patchy. On Kilimanjaro, signal appears at some points on the climb and disappears for long stretches in between. With two networks available, your phone uses whichever is stronger, which helps in the areas where coverage is thin.

Arriving in Tanzania

Safari visitors usually fly into Kilimanjaro International (JRO), between Arusha and Moshi, while Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Zanzibar (ZNZ) serve the coast. Check the current visa rules for your passport before you travel.

Tanzania uses the shilling (TZS), but US dollars are widely used for safaris, park fees, hotels and tips; bring clean notes printed recently, as older ones are often refused. Cards work at many lodges and hotels, sometimes with a surcharge. Fast ferries link Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar in about two hours, and small planes connect the safari parks. Swahili is the main language, and English is widely spoken in tourism.

Installing your Tanzania eSIM

Install your Tanzania eSIM before you fly, on WiFi, by scanning the QR code from your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). The APN sets itself. When you land, choose the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for it.

Download offline maps and save lodge contacts before heading into the parks.

Common questions

Which networks does the Travelren eSIM use in Tanzania?

Halotel and Airtel, both on 4G. Your phone uses the stronger signal where you are, which helps in rural areas. The APN sets itself, so it connects once data roaming is on for the eSIM line.

Will I have signal in the Serengeti?

At many lodges and near park headquarters, yes, but the open plains are patchy and some areas have none. Many lodges offer WiFi. Share your itinerary before game drives and expect some offline time.

Does the eSIM work on Kilimanjaro?

In places. Signal appears at some camps and ridges on the way up and disappears for long stretches in between. Your guiding company handles communications and emergencies, so treat any signal on the mountain as a bonus.

Does Telstra's International Day Pass cover Tanzania?

No. Tanzania isn't on Telstra's International Day Pass list, checked September 2026, so Telstra customers pay standard roaming rates there. AT&T's International Day Pass does include Tanzania, at US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is one price for your trip.

When does my Tanzania plan start?

When your phone first connects to a network in Tanzania. You can install it at home, and the days start once you land at Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

Will the eSIM work on Zanzibar?

Yes. Stone Town and the main beach areas, including Nungwi, Kendwa and Paje, have good coverage. Signal can be weaker on quieter stretches of coast and on boat trips.

Should I bring US dollars to Tanzania?

Yes, for tips, some park fees and many safari extras. Bring clean notes printed in recent years, as older or damaged ones are often refused. Shillings are handier for small purchases, and cards work at many lodges.

Can I use the Tanzania plan in Kenya?

No. It covers Tanzania only, so safaris that cross into Kenya's Maasai Mara, or trips that continue to Rwanda or Uganda, need a plan for that country as well.
