Network coverage in Kenya

Your Travelren eSIM runs on Safaricom, Kenya's largest mobile network, on 4G. Coverage is strong in Nairobi, Mombasa, Diani, Malindi and Watamu, and along the main highways and the Nairobi to Mombasa railway.

Safari areas are more mixed. In the Maasai Mara, many camps and the areas near park gates have signal, while parts of the reserve are patchy, and Amboseli, Samburu and Tsavo vary by camp and route. Remote northern parks and conservancies can be offline for long stretches. The plans are capped, from 1 GB to 10 GB, which suits maps, messaging and photos rather than heavy streaming.

Arriving in Kenya

Most visitors land at Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) in Nairobi, with Moi International (MBA) in Mombasa serving the coast. Every visitor needs an electronic travel authorisation (eTA), applied for online at least a few days before travel.

Kenya uses the shilling (KES). Kenyans pay for almost everything with M-Pesa, which needs a local number, so visitors rely on cards in hotels, lodges and larger restaurants and carry cash for markets, small shops and tips. Most safaris include road transfers or light-aircraft flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport. The Madaraka Express train links Nairobi and Mombasa in about five hours. Swahili and English are both official languages.

Installing your Kenya eSIM

Install your Kenya eSIM before your flight, on WiFi, by scanning the QR code in your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). No APN setup is needed. On landing, make the eSIM your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it.

Before heading on safari, download offline maps and save your camp and driver contacts.

Common questions

Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Kenya?

Safaricom, Kenya's largest network, on 4G. It covers the cities, the coast and the main roads. The APN sets itself, so it connects once data roaming is on for the eSIM line.

Will I have signal in the Maasai Mara?

Near park gates and at many camps, yes, but coverage is patchy across parts of the reserve. Many camps also offer WiFi. Share your itinerary before heading out on game drives, and expect some offline time.

Can I use M-Pesa with the eSIM?

No. M-Pesa needs a Kenyan phone number, and this eSIM is data only. Cards work in hotels, lodges and larger shops, and cash covers markets, small vendors and tips.

Does Telstra's International Day Pass cover Kenya?

No. Kenya isn't on Telstra's International Day Pass list, checked September 2026, so Telstra customers pay standard roaming rates there. AT&T's International Day Pass does include Kenya, at US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is one price for the trip.

When does my Kenya plan start?

When your phone first connects to a network in Kenya. You can install the eSIM at home and the days begin once you land in Nairobi or Mombasa.

Do I need an eTA for Kenya?

Yes. Since January 2024, almost every visitor, including Australians, Americans and Britons, needs an approved eTA before travelling. Apply on the official Kenyan government site several days ahead, since airlines check it before boarding.

How much data do the Kenya plans include?

They're capped, from 1 GB for 7 days up to 10 GB for 30 days. That covers maps, messaging and sharing photos on a typical safari; use camp WiFi for video calls and large uploads.

Does the eSIM work on the beaches at Diani and Watamu?

Yes. The coast has strong Safaricom coverage, including the beach resorts at Diani, Watamu and Malindi, so you can message drivers, book dhow trips and share photos from the beach.
