Network coverage in Norway

Your Travelren eSIM runs on Telia, one of Norway's national networks, with 5G in the cities. For a long, mountainous country, coverage is remarkably good: Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim and Tromsø are fully covered, as are the main fjord villages such as Flåm, Geiranger and Balestrand, the Lofoten islands and most main roads.

The gaps are in the high mountains and remote valleys, on long hikes such as Trolltunga and on mountain plateaus like Hardangervidda, and in deep fjords away from villages. For a typical route of cities, fjords and a coastal voyage, you'll have data almost everywhere.

  • Weather apps such as Yr before hikes and drives

Watch out for

  • Gaps on high mountain hikes and plateaus
  • Weaker signal in deep, remote fjords away from villages
  • Data only: no Norwegian number

Arriving in Norway

Most visitors arrive at Oslo Gardermoen (OSL), where the airport express train reaches the city in around 20 minutes, with Bergen (BGO) and Tromsø (TOS) the main alternatives. Norway uses the krone (NOK) and is close to cashless: cards and phone wallets are accepted almost everywhere, including small cafes, ferries and parking machines.

Many tolls and car parks are billed automatically by number plate, which hire companies pass on afterwards. Ferries are part of many road trips along the fjords. Weather in the mountains changes quickly, and Norwegians check Yr before any hike. In summer the far north has daylight around the clock, and in winter it has only a few hours.

Installing your Norway eSIM

Install your Norway eSIM on WiFi before your trip by scanning the QR code in your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). It sets its own APN. When you land in Oslo, Bergen or Tromsø, make the eSIM your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it.

Common questions

Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Norway?

Telia, with 5G in the cities and larger towns. It covers the cities, the main fjord villages, Lofoten and most roads. The APN sets itself, so it connects once data roaming is on for the eSIM line.

Will I have signal on the Norwegian fjords?

In the villages and along most main roads, yes, including Flåm, Geiranger and Balestrand. On boats and in remote arms of a fjord away from villages, signal can drop for a while. It usually comes back as you approach the next settlement.

Does the eSIM work on hikes like Trolltunga?

At the trailhead and for parts of the route, often yes, but high on the plateau and in some valleys, signal is weak or absent. Download the route and a weather forecast before you start, and tell someone your plans.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in Norway?

Norway is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is paid once for your trip.

When does my Norway plan start?

When your phone first connects to a network in Norway. You can install the eSIM at home, and the days begin once you land and connect.

Do I need cash in Norway?

Almost never. Cards and phone payments are accepted nearly everywhere, including ferries, cafes and parking machines. A small amount of cash can help at remote farm stalls with honesty boxes, but many of those take phone payments too.

Will the Norway plan work in Sweden or Finland?

No. It covers Norway only, so it stops working when you cross into Sweden or Finland, which happens on some Arctic road trips. Buy a plan for each country, or a Europe plan that lists all of them.

Is 5G available on the Norway plan?

Yes, in cities and larger towns, if your phone supports it. Elsewhere you'll use 4G, which is fast enough for navigation, video calls and streaming along most routes.
