Network coverage in Jamaica

Your Travelren eSIM can use both of Jamaica's networks, Digicel and Flow, on 4G. Coverage is good in Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Kingston and Port Antonio, along the north-coast highway and at the resort strips around them.

The Blue Mountains, Cockpit Country and parts of the rural south coast are patchier, with dead spots in valleys and on winding roads. With two networks available, your phone uses whichever is stronger where you are. Jamaica plans need the APN entered by hand as wbdata, so do that straight after installing.

Watch out for

  • The APN has to be set by hand to wbdata
  • Patchy in the Blue Mountains and Cockpit Country
  • Data only: no Jamaican number

Arriving in Jamaica

Most visitors arrive at Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay, the gateway to the north-coast resorts, while Norman Manley International (KIN) serves Kingston. Jamaica uses the Jamaican dollar (JMD), though US dollars are widely accepted in resort areas, often with change given in local currency.

Resorts and larger restaurants take cards, while route taxis, jerk stands, markets and tips run on cash. Licensed taxis carry red PPV plates, and agreeing the fare before you get in is normal. Knutsford Express coaches link the main towns, and driving is on the left. Roads between the resort towns are good, but mountain and rural roads are narrow and winding, so allow extra time.

Installing your Jamaica eSIM

Install your Jamaica eSIM at home on WiFi by scanning the QR code from your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). Then set the APN to wbdata in the eSIM's mobile data network settings, because Jamaica plans don't configure it themselves. On landing at Montego Bay or Kingston, choose the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for it.

Common questions

Which networks does the Travelren eSIM use in Jamaica?

Both Digicel and Flow, Jamaica's two mobile networks, on 4G. Your phone uses whichever signal is stronger. One setup step is needed: after installing, set the APN to wbdata in the eSIM's mobile data settings.

How do I set the APN for Jamaica?

On iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, select the Jamaica eSIM, Mobile Data Network, then enter wbdata in the APN field. On Android: open the eSIM's Access Point Names, add a new APN and type wbdata. Save and select it, then restart the phone. If data still doesn't start, email [email protected].

Does Telstra roaming include data in Jamaica?

No. Telstra lists Jamaica in Zone 3 of its International Day Pass, which costs A$10 a day on eligible plans and includes calls and texts but no data, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass covers Jamaica at US$12 a day. A Travelren plan gives you data for the whole trip at one price.

When does my Jamaica plan start?

When your phone first connects to Digicel or Flow in Jamaica. Install the eSIM at home, set the APN, and the days start once you land at Montego Bay or Kingston and connect.

Will I have signal in the Blue Mountains?

In some places. Coverage is patchy on the winding mountain roads and in the valleys, and the coffee farms and trails higher up can be without signal. Download maps before heading up from Kingston.

Should I pay in Jamaican or US dollars?

Either works in resort areas, but paying in Jamaican dollars usually gets a fairer price outside the resorts, and change often comes back in local currency anyway. Carry some cash for taxis, markets and tips.

Can I use WhatsApp to arrange taxis and tours?

Yes. WhatsApp is widely used by drivers, guides and small businesses in Jamaica, and it runs over the eSIM's data, so you can message and call without roaming charges on your home number.

Is it worth having data at an all-inclusive resort?

Usually. Resort WiFi may be limited to certain areas, and it won't help on excursions, in taxis or on day trips to Negril, Ocho Rios or the Blue Mountains. Your own data works anywhere Digicel or Flow has signal.
