Network coverage in Chile
Your Travelren eSIM can use Movistar on 4G and WOM, which has 5G in the larger cities. Coverage is strong in Santiago, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, in the wine valleys around the capital, and in Puerto Varas, Pucón and the other Lake District towns.

Chile's shape makes the rest harder: in the Atacama, San Pedro has signal but the salt flats, geysers and high-altitude lagoons mostly don't, and in Patagonia, Puerto Natales is covered while much of Torres del Paine National Park is not. The Carretera Austral has long stretches without signal. Use the eSIM freely in towns and plan the wild parts offline.

Arriving in Chile
International flights land at Santiago's Arturo Merino Benítez airport (SCL), with domestic connections to Calama for the Atacama, Puerto Montt for the Lake District and Punta Arenas for Patagonia. Chile uses the peso (CLP).

Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted in cities, restaurants and supermarkets, while small shops, markets, buses outside Santiago and some rural guesthouses want cash. Distances are huge, so most visitors fly between regions. Tipping around 10 per cent is customary in restaurants, and the bill often suggests it. Chile runs from desert to glaciers, so weather and daylight vary enormously by region and season. Pack layers for any trip that covers more than one region.
Installing your Chile eSIM
Install your Chile eSIM on WiFi before you fly by scanning the QR code in your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). No APN setup is needed. On landing in Santiago, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.

Common questions
Which networks does the Travelren eSIM use in Chile?
Movistar on 4G and WOM, with 5G in Santiago and other large cities. Your phone uses the stronger signal where you are, and the APN sets itself, so it connects once data roaming is on for the eSIM line.
Will I have signal in Torres del Paine?
Only in a few spots. Puerto Natales is well covered, but most of the park, including the W and O trek routes, has little or no mobile coverage. Some refugios and hotels sell WiFi. Book your transfers and refugios before you go, and download maps.
Does the eSIM work in the Atacama Desert?
In San Pedro de Atacama, yes. On day trips to the geysers, salt flats and high-altitude lagoons, signal is patchy or absent. Download maps and bookings before setting off, and treat excursion days as mostly offline.
How much does Telstra charge to roam in Chile?
Chile is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is paid once for the trip.

When does my Chile plan start?
When your phone first connects to a network in Chile. Install the eSIM at home and the plan's days begin once you land in Santiago and connect.
Will the Chile eSIM work in Argentina?
No. The plan covers Chile only, which matters on Patagonian itineraries that cross into El Calafate or El Chaltén, and on bus trips between Santiago and Mendoza. Buy an Argentina plan for that part of the trip, or check whether a regional plan covers both.
Do I need cash in Chile?
Some. Cards work in most city shops, restaurants and hotels, but small shops, markets, rural buses and some guesthouses want pesos. ATMs are easy to find in towns, less so in the remote south.
Is 5G available on the Chile plan?
Yes, on WOM in Santiago and other large cities, if your phone supports it. Elsewhere you'll use 4G, which handles video calls, navigation and streaming in the towns.
