Network coverage in Brazil

Your Travelren eSIM runs on TIM, one of Brazil's three national networks, with 5G in the big cities. Coverage is strong in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte and the other state capitals, and along the busy coast between them.

The Iguaçu Falls area around Foz do Iguaçu is covered too. The interior is a different story: much of the Amazon, including most jungle lodges outside Manaus, the Pantanal wetlands and remote stretches of the north-east coast have little or no signal. Brazil plans need their APN entered by hand as internet, so do that straight after installing.

Arriving in Brazil

International flights mostly land at São Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) or Rio de Janeiro Galeão (GIG). Since April 2025, Australian, American and Canadian citizens need an eVisa before they fly, while UK citizens don't.

Brazil uses the real (BRL). Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted, and locals often pay by Pix, an instant bank-transfer system that visitors usually can't use without a Brazilian bank account. Ride-hailing apps are the usual way to get around the big cities, especially at night. Distances are large, so most itineraries combine domestic flights with a few long bus journeys. Portuguese is the language everywhere, and a translation app helps outside the big hotels.

Installing your Brazil eSIM

Install your Brazil eSIM on WiFi before your trip by scanning the QR code from your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). Then set the APN to internet in that line's mobile data network settings, because Brazil plans don't set it automatically. When you land, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.

Common questions

Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Brazil?

TIM, with 5G in the major cities. It's one of Brazil's three national networks. One setup step is needed: after installing, set the APN to internet in the eSIM's mobile data settings. Your order confirmation shows the APN too.

How do I set the APN for Brazil?

On iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, choose the Brazil eSIM, Mobile Data Network, then type internet in the APN field. On Android: open the eSIM's Access Point Names, add a new APN and enter internet. Save and select it, then restart the phone if data doesn't start.

Do I need a visa for Brazil?

Australian, American and Canadian citizens have needed an eVisa since April 2025, and airlines check it before boarding. UK citizens don't need one for a short visit. Check the current rules for your passport before you book.

Will I have signal in the Amazon?

In Manaus, yes. Most jungle lodges are hours away by boat and have little or no mobile coverage, though some offer limited WiFi. Treat a lodge stay as offline time and sort out anything important before you leave the city.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in Brazil?

Brazil is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is a single payment for the trip.

When does my Brazil plan start?

When your phone first connects to a network in Brazil. You can install the eSIM and set the APN at home, and the days start once you land and connect.

Can I use Pix in Brazil?

Usually not without a Brazilian bank account, although some international payment apps have started to support it. Cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere visitors go, so a card is enough for most trips.

Is it safe to use my phone in the street in Brazil?

In busy areas of Rio and São Paulo, phone theft is a real risk, so step inside a shop or cafe to check maps, and book rides from indoors. Keep a passcode on your phone, and note your order email so you can reinstall a plan if you need to.
