Network coverage in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico runs on US carrier networks, so coverage is strong and familiar. Your Travelren eSIM connects on T-Mobile — with Liberty and Claro the other strong island-wide networks — delivering 5G across the San Juan metro, Condado, Isla Verde and Old San Juan, and solid 4G LTE along the main coastal highways and through Ponce, Mayagüez and the larger towns. El Yunque National Forest has coverage near the main entrances and visitor centre but drops on the interior trails. The mountainous Cordillera Central spine and the offshore islands of Vieques and Culebra are the weakest spots — expect patchy signal there. For the rainforest trails and the islands, download offline maps before you go; everywhere else along the coast you can expect a fast, reliable connection.
What works in Puerto Rico
✅ Works well
- Google Maps and Waze for driving the island — a rental car is the normal way to get around
- Uber across the San Juan metro area
- WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal and FaceTime over data
- Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless cards everywhere — it is the US
- Streaming and video calls on 5G in San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde
- Ferry and tour booking apps for Vieques and Culebra day trips
⚠️ Watch out for
- El Yunque rainforest interior trails have weak or no signal — download offline maps before hiking
- The Cordillera Central mountains and inland towns can drop to slower 4G
- Vieques and Culebra (the offshore islands) have patchier coverage than the main island
- Data-only eSIM — no phone number, so you cannot receive local SMS codes (use WhatsApp to stay reachable)
Arriving in Puerto Rico
The gateway is Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, with strong T-Mobile and Liberty coverage throughout. As a US territory, Puerto Rico uses the US dollar, US-style power outlets and the same card and contactless infrastructure as the mainland — Apple Pay, Google Pay and tap-to-pay work virtually everywhere, and foreign Visa/Mastercard/Amex are accepted without trouble. English and Spanish are both widely used. There is no metro for visitors beyond San Juan's limited Tren Urbano; a rental car is effectively essential for seeing the island, and Uber covers the San Juan metro. Importantly, if you are a US traveller your existing AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon plan already covers Puerto Rico as domestic — you do not need a travel eSIM. A Travelren eSIM is for visitors from Australia, the UK, New Zealand and elsewhere who would otherwise pay international roaming.
Installing your Puerto Rico eSIM
iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.
Install your Puerto Rico eSIM at home on WiFi before you fly — it takes about two minutes. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your email. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Leave your home SIM as the primary line for calls and SMS, and switch the Puerto Rico eSIM on for data only when you land at San Juan. Your home number stays active throughout. If you are travelling from the US, you likely don't need this eSIM at all — your domestic plan already covers Puerto Rico.
Leave your home SIM in. Set the Puerto Rico eSIM as your data line only. Your number stays active the whole trip.
