Network coverage in the Netherlands

Your Travelren eSIM runs on KPN, the Dutch incumbent network, on 4G. The Netherlands is small, flat and densely built, which makes it one of the easiest countries in Europe to stay connected in: coverage is continuous across Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven, on intercity trains, along cycle routes and out in the countryside and coastal towns.

Weak spots are rare and mostly indoors, in basements or older buildings with thick walls. For almost any itinerary, from a canal-side city break to cycling between windmills and tulip fields, you can expect the eSIM to work wherever you go.

What works in the Netherlands

Works well

  • The NS app for train times and platform changes
  • 9292 or Google Maps for trams, buses and the metro
  • Bike hire apps and cycle-route navigation

  • Timed-entry museum and attraction tickets, which many places sell online only
  • Video calls and streaming across the country

Watch out for

  • 4G only on these plans
  • Most plans are data only; choose a calls and texts plan if you want minutes and SMS
  • The plan covers the Netherlands only, not neighbouring Belgium or Germany

Arriving in the Netherlands

Most visitors arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), where trains leave from beneath the terminal for Amsterdam Centraal in around 15 minutes, and KPN coverage is continuous from the gate to the platform. The Netherlands uses the euro and is close to cashless: many cafes and museums take cards only, and on trains, trams, buses and the metro you can check in and out by tapping a contactless bank card or phone at the gates.

Dutch debit cards dominate, and a few smaller shops have historically been fussy about foreign credit cards, so carry a second card. Cycling is how locals get around, and bike lanes have their own right of way, so look before stepping into one.

Installing your Netherlands eSIM

Install your Netherlands eSIM on WiFi before you travel by scanning the QR code in your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). It sets its own APN. On arrival at Schiphol, pick the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it if your phone asks.

If you bought a calls and texts plan, you can also make it your line for calls; with a data-only plan, keep your home SIM for calls and texts with its roaming off.

Common questions

Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in the Netherlands?

KPN, on 4G. KPN is the country's incumbent operator, and its coverage is continuous across cities, trains and countryside. The APN sets itself automatically, so once the eSIM is installed and switched on, it connects.

Can I get a plan with calls and texts in the Netherlands?

Yes. As well as data-only plans, some Netherlands plans include calls and texts, from 10 up to 200 minutes and SMS depending on the plan. They're listed under the Calls & SMS tab in the plan picker. Choose one if you want to phone restaurants, hotels or tour operators during your trip.

Can I pay for trains and trams with my phone?

Yes. On NS trains and most trams, buses and metros, you can check in and out by tapping a contactless bank card or phone wallet at the gates or readers instead of buying a ticket. Always check out at the end of your journey, or you'll be charged a higher fare.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is paid once for the whole trip.

Show 4 more questions
Will the eSIM work if I cross into Belgium or Germany?

No. It's a Netherlands-only plan, so it stops working at the border. Day trips to Antwerp, Bruges or Cologne need a separate plan, or a Europe plan that lists every country on your route.

When does my Netherlands plan start?

When your phone first connects to KPN in the Netherlands. Installing the eSIM at home doesn't start the clock, so you can set it up days before you fly and the plan's days begin when you land at Schiphol and connect.

Is 4G fast enough in the Netherlands?

Yes. KPN's 4G is fast and consistent, easily handling video calls, streaming and navigation, including on intercity trains. The plans don't include 5G, but few travellers notice the difference.

Do I need cash in the Netherlands?

Rarely. Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, and many places are card-only. Keep a little cash for the odd market stall or public toilet, and carry a second card in case a smaller shop won't take your credit card.
