Network coverage in Malaysia
Your Travelren Malaysia eSIM roams on Maxis, which alongside CelcomDigi is one of the two networks that matter here. Peninsular Malaysia is comprehensively covered: expect 5G across Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Penang, Johor Bahru, Melaka and Ipoh, and reliable 4G LTE along the whole west-coast corridor, the North-South Expressway, the Cameron Highlands road, and the east-coast towns of Kuantan and Kota Bharu. KLIA and KLIA2 are well covered gate to gate, as are the KLIA Ekspres and the KL city rail lines. Coverage is genuinely weaker in Malaysian Borneo — Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Miri are fine, but the Sabah and Sarawak interiors thin out fast once you leave the coastal towns. Island coverage is good on Langkawi and Penang, patchier on Tioman and the Perhentians.

- Grab for rides and food delivery — the default app across Malaysia, and it needs data constantly
- Google Maps and Waze, both heavily used for the expressway network and KL traffic
- WhatsApp, which is the standard messaging app for hotels, tour operators and drivers here
- Touch 'n Go eWallet for tolls, parking and a growing share of retail QR payments
- Live KTM, MRT and LRT times, plus airline apps for the short AirAsia hops
- Cloud photo backup over 5G from the Petronas Towers, Batu Caves and George Town
- Hotspotting a laptop — most Travelren Malaysia plans allow tethering
⚠️ Watch out for
- Sabah and Sarawak interiors are the real gap. Mount Kinabalu above the trailhead, Mulu, the Kinabatangan river lodges and most of the Borneo rainforest have intermittent or no signal regardless of network.
- Smaller islands — Tioman, the Perhentians, parts of Redang — have limited coverage and can drop entirely on the far side from the mainland.
- Data-only. No local voice calls or SMS on the eSIM line, so keep your home SIM active if you need a bank OTP.
- Does NOT cover Singapore or Brunei despite the land borders. Crossing the Causeway to Singapore needs a separate plan or a regional one that lists both.
Arriving in Malaysia
KLIA and KLIA2 both have free WiFi, and the KLIA Ekspres reaches KL Sentral in 28 minutes, so you can land and sort yourself out — but Grab is where you actually need data, and it is the default way to get anywhere in Kuala Lumpur. Get a Touch 'n Go card or the eWallet early: it covers tolls, parking, rail and an increasing number of shops and hawker stalls. Cash still rules at night markets and smaller kopitiams. Malaysia is well set up for travellers on the west coast, where English is widely spoken and the expressway network is excellent. Grab pricing is transparent and usually cheaper than a metered taxi. If you are heading to Borneo, download offline maps before you fly — the interiors are where coverage stops being dependable.
Installing your Malaysia eSIM
iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.
Install before you fly, over your home WiFi — the QR code arrives by email as soon as you buy, and installing does not start the plan. On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM and scan. On Android: Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add eSIM. Label it "Travelren MY" so it is obvious next to your home line. Leave the Travelren line switched off until you land, keep your home SIM as default for calls and texts, then enable data roaming on the Travelren line only and set it as your data line. Most Malaysia plans activate when your phone first connects to a local network rather than at install, so installing early costs you nothing.
