Network coverage in Albania

Albania has surprisingly strong mobile coverage for its size and price level. Your Travelren Albania eSIM connects to One — which now runs the country's largest 5G network — with Vodafone Albania, the long-standing leader for rural and mountain reach, as a fallback. 5G is live across Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë, Ksamil, Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër, Fier and most of the Riviera resort towns, with strong 4G LTE everywhere else along the coast and the main SH and A-road network. Coverage is reliable through the whole tourist belt from Shkodër in the north to Sarandë and Ksamil in the south. The notable gaps are the Albanian Alps — Theth, Valbonë and the Accursed Mountains — and the remote interior valleys, where signal thins out or disappears entirely. Plan for offline maps before any trek.

What works in Albania

✅ Works well

  • Google Maps and offline maps for navigating Tirana, the Riviera and the SH-class roads
  • Bolt rideshare and Bolt scooters in Tirana and Durrës
  • WhatsApp, Viber, iMessage and Telegram over data — Viber is especially widely used locally
  • Booking.com and Airbnb messaging for the many family-run guesthouses
  • Streaming and video calls on 5G in Tirana, Sarandë and Vlorë
  • Revolut and Wise for cards and currency — both work normally over data

⚠️ Watch out for

  • The Albanian Alps — Theth, Valbonë, the Accursed Mountains and the Theth-to-Valbonë trek — have weak or no signal; download offline maps before you set out
  • Remote interior valleys and parts of the southern mountain roads can drop to 3G or no service
  • Some mountain guesthouses rely on patchy WiFi rather than mobile data
  • Data-only eSIM — no Albanian phone number, so you cannot receive SMS codes from local services (use WhatsApp/Viber to stay in touch)

Arriving in Albania

Tirana International Airport "Nënë Tereza" (TIA) — the country's only international airport — has free WiFi after a short sign-in, but it is slow at peak arrival times. Albania is still a largely cash economy: the lek (ALL) is needed for furgons (shared minibuses), small shops, markets, mountain guesthouses and many taxis, though hotels, larger restaurants and supermarkets in Tirana, Durrës and Sarandë take cards and contactless. Euros are sometimes accepted in tourist areas but at a poor rate — pay in lek. ATMs are common in towns but scarce in the mountains, so carry cash before heading to Theth or Valbonë. There is no metro or rail network worth relying on for tourists; intercity travel is by furgon or bus, and Bolt covers taxis in Tirana and Durrës. A working eSIM on arrival makes Bolt, offline maps and guesthouse messaging far easier than juggling airport WiFi.

Installing your Albania eSIM

1
Install on your home WiFi

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.

2
Land in Albania

Install your Albania eSIM at home on WiFi before you fly — it takes about two minutes. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your email. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Leave your home SIM as the primary line for calls and SMS, and switch the Albania eSIM on for data only when you land at Tirana. Your home number stays active the whole trip. If you forget to install before departure, Tirana Airport has free WiFi that is just about enough for a two-minute setup.

3
Keep your home SIM for calls

Leave your home SIM in. Set the Albania eSIM as your data line only. Your number stays active the whole trip.

Common questions

Which carrier does Travelren use in Albania?
Your eSIM connects to One — which operates the largest 5G network in Albania — with Vodafone Albania as a fallback for rural and mountain areas. Between them they cover the entire tourist belt from Shkodër to Ksamil. Your phone selects the strongest available signal automatically, with no APN setup or manual network switching needed.
Is there 5G in Albania?
Yes. 5G is live across Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë, Ksamil, Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër and Fier, plus most Riviera resort towns, and it is still expanding. Outside the 5G footprint you get widespread 4G LTE along the coast and the main road network. In the Albanian Alps and remote interior, expect 4G to thin out to 3G or no signal.
Will my eSIM work on the Theth to Valbonë trek?
Only partially. The villages of Theth and Valbonë have some signal, but the high mountain pass between them and much of the Accursed Mountains have weak or no coverage. Download Google Maps offline areas and any trail map before you start walking. Treat the trek as an offline day and don't rely on live data for navigation up on the pass.
Does Albania support eSIM?
Yes. Both One and Vodafone Albania support eSIM, and a Travelren eSIM works on any unlocked eSIM-capable phone. iPhones from the XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy models are compatible. One exception: iPhones bought in mainland China lack eSIM hardware even when the model looks identical. Use travelren.com/device-check to confirm your phone in 30 seconds. Check my device →
Can I use my eSIM at Tirana Airport?
Yes. Tirana International Airport "Nënë Tereza" (TIA) has strong One and Vodafone coverage throughout the terminal and the forecourt. Your eSIM activates the moment your phone connects to an Albanian network — usually before you reach passport control — so you can order a Bolt or check your guesthouse directions without hunting for the airport WiFi.
How much does roaming in Albania cost without a Travelren eSIM?
Albania is outside the EU, so it is not covered by free EU roaming. EE in the UK charges £5 per day for an Albania pass. Telstra's International Day Pass to Albania is AUD$5 per day, and AT&T's International Day Pass is USD$12 per day. A Travelren data plan is typically cheaper per day and avoids the fixed midnight reset that can clip your final day short. Check my device →
Do I need cash in Albania if I have data?
Yes — Albania is still largely a cash economy. A working eSIM lets you use Bolt, Revolut, Wise and offline maps, but you will still need Albanian lek (ALL) for furgons, small shops, markets, many taxis and mountain guesthouses. Cards and contactless work in Tirana, Durrës and Sarandë hotels and larger restaurants. Withdraw lek before heading into the Alps, where ATMs are scarce.
Is the free WiFi at Tirana Airport any good?
It works for basic browsing after a short sign-in, but it slows noticeably when several flights land together, and coverage thins outside the main terminal. It is fine for a quick message but not for reliably booking a Bolt or loading maps on arrival. For connectivity the moment you land, install your Travelren eSIM before you fly.
