Network coverage in Malta

Your Travelren eSIM runs on Epic, one of Malta's three mobile networks, on 4G. Malta is small and densely populated, so coverage is close to complete: Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Mdina, the Three Cities and the resort towns of Buġibba and Mellieħa all have strong signal, as do the Gozo ferry crossing and most of Gozo itself.

The few weak spots are sheltered bays and cliffs on the west coast, parts of Comino, and basements or thick-walled old buildings. For a week of sightseeing, beaches and a day trip to Gozo, expect the eSIM to work almost everywhere you go.

Arriving in Malta

Malta International Airport (MLA) sits in the south of the main island, around 20 minutes by car from Valletta, and has strong coverage. Malta uses the euro, and cards and contactless are accepted almost everywhere, though a few small bars and kiosks prefer cash.

English is an official language alongside Maltese, which makes signs, menus and bookings easy. Driving is on the left. Buses reach most of the islands but can be slow in summer traffic, so many visitors use ride-hailing apps for shorter hops. Gozo is a 25-minute ferry ride from Ċirkewwa, or a fast ferry from Valletta. Summer is hot and busy, so booking boat trips and dive slots ahead is worthwhile.

Installing your Malta eSIM

Install your Malta eSIM before you travel by scanning the QR code from your order email on WiFi: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM on iPhone, or Settings, SIM manager on Android. There's no APN to enter. When you land at Malta International, switch mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming for it.

Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts, but disable roaming on it to avoid charges.

Common questions

Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Malta?

Epic, on 4G. Epic is one of Malta's three mobile networks and covers the main island, Gozo and the ferry crossing. The APN sets itself, so it connects once data roaming is switched on for the eSIM line.

Does the Malta eSIM work on Gozo and Comino?

On Gozo, yes, including Victoria, Xlendi, Marsalforn and the Ramla Bay area. Comino is tiny and mostly undeveloped, with weaker signal in places, although the Blue Lagoon area usually has some coverage.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in Malta?

Malta is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is a single payment for the trip.

When does my Malta plan start?

When your phone first connects to a network in Malta. Install the eSIM at home and the days begin when you land and connect, so setting it up a few days early costs you nothing.

What's the easiest way to get around Malta?

Buses cover most of the islands and the Tallinja app shows live times, but routes can be slow in summer. Bolt, Uber and eCabs are widely used for shorter trips, and ferries link Valletta, Sliema, the Three Cities and Gozo. All of these are easier with mobile data.

Can I use the eSIM on a cruise stop in Valletta?

Yes. Once your phone connects to Epic in port, you have data for the day ashore without paying for ship WiFi. The plan's days start from that first connection, so a short plan suits a single stop.

Is 4G enough in Malta?

Yes. Epic's 4G is fast across the islands and handles video calls, streaming and navigation easily. These plans don't include 5G, which makes little difference for most travellers.

Do I need cash in Malta?

Rarely. Cards and phone payments work in almost all shops, restaurants and taxis. Keep a few euro for small kiosks, some village bars and festa stalls.
