Network coverage in Israel

Depending on the plan, your Travelren eSIM runs on Partner and Pelephone, two of Israel's main networks, or on Annatel, all with 5G in the cities. Israel is compact and well covered: Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and Eilat have strong signal, as do the main highways, the Mediterranean coast and the Sea of Galilee.

The Dead Sea resorts and Masada are covered, while parts of the Negev desert and some canyons and hiking trails have gaps. Some plans set themselves up; others, from the Annatel range, need the APN annatel entered by hand. Check your government's current travel advice before you book.

Arriving in Israel

Almost all international flights land at Ben Gurion (TLV), between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, with trains to both cities. Visitors from visa-exempt countries, including Australia, the US and the UK, need an ETA-IL approved online before they travel.

Israel uses the shekel (ILS), and cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere. From Friday afternoon to Saturday evening, Shabbat changes the pace: most buses and trains stop, many shops close, and in Jerusalem especially, the city goes quiet. Tel Aviv stays livelier, and taxis still run. Plan airport transfers and intercity travel around it. Hebrew and Arabic are the official languages, and English is widely spoken.

Installing your Israel eSIM

Install your Israel eSIM before you fly, on WiFi, by scanning the QR code from your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). If your plan is from the Annatel range, set the APN to annatel in the eSIM's mobile data network settings; your order confirmation tells you if it's needed. On arrival, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.

Common questions

Which networks does the Travelren eSIM use in Israel?

It depends on the plan. Some run on Partner and Pelephone and set themselves up; others run on Annatel and need the APN annatel entered by hand. All have 5G in the cities. Your order confirmation shows the APN too.

How do I set the APN for an Annatel plan?

On iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, choose the Israel eSIM, Mobile Data Network, then enter annatel as the APN. On Android: open the eSIM's Access Point Names, add a new APN and type annatel. Save and select it, then restart the phone if data doesn't start.

Is there an Israel plan with calls and texts?

Yes, one plan includes 10 minutes and 10 texts alongside its data, which is enough for confirming a booking or a taxi. It's listed under the Calls & SMS tab in the plan picker. The other plans are data only.

Do I need an ETA-IL to visit Israel?

If your passport is from a visa-exempt country, such as Australia, the US or the UK, yes. Apply on the official Israeli government site at least 72 hours before travel. Airlines may check it before boarding.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in Israel?

Israel is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is one payment for your trip.

When does my Israel plan start?

When your phone first connects to a network in Israel. You can install the eSIM and set the APN at home, and the plan starts when you land at Ben Gurion.

How does Shabbat affect getting around?

From Friday afternoon to Saturday evening, most buses and trains don't run and many shops close. Taxis still operate, and Moovit and Gett show what's running. Plan airport transfers and intercity trips so they don't fall during Shabbat.

Will I have signal at the Dead Sea and Masada?

Yes, at the main resorts, beaches and Masada. On desert trails and in canyons such as Ein Gedi's upper paths, signal can drop. Download maps and carry water on desert hikes.
