Network coverage in Cambodia
Your Travelren eSIM connects to Smart, one of Cambodia's largest mobile networks, on 4G. Coverage is strong in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, around the main Angkor temples such as Angkor Wat, the Bayon and Ta Prohm, and in the coastal towns of Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep.

The national highways between the main towns are mostly covered. Signal becomes weaker in the Cardamom Mountains, in parts of the north-east around Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri, and on some of the islands off Sihanoukville, such as Koh Rong Samloem, where it depends on which beach you're on. Everywhere else on the usual route, 4G is fast enough for maps, video calls and uploading photos.

Arriving in Cambodia
Phnom Penh's Techo International Airport (KTI) replaced the old Phnom Penh International in September 2025 and sits well south of the city, so allow time for the transfer. Siem Reap Angkor International (SAI), which opened in 2023, is around an hour's drive from town.

Cambodia runs on two currencies: US dollars are used for most tourist prices, hotels and tuk-tuk fares, while change under a dollar comes back in Cambodian riel (KHR). Carry small, undamaged US notes, because torn or marked bills are often refused. Cards work in mid-range and upmarket hotels and restaurants, while markets, street food and tuk-tuks are cash.
Installing your Cambodia eSIM
Install the Cambodia eSIM before you leave home: scan the QR code from your order email in Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM on iPhone, or the SIM manager on Android. No APN setup is needed. On arrival at Techo or Siem Reap Angkor airport, switch mobile data to the eSIM and enable data roaming on that line.

Keep your home SIM on if you need bank codes by SMS, and turn roaming off on it to avoid charges.
Common questions
Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Cambodia?
Smart, on 4G. It's one of Cambodia's largest mobile networks, with strong coverage in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, the Angkor temples and the south coast. The APN sets itself, so it connects once data roaming is on for the eSIM line.
Will my eSIM work at Angkor Wat?
Yes. Around the main temples and along the usual touring routes, including Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm, coverage is generally good. Signal is weaker at outlying sites such as Beng Mealea and Koh Ker, so download a map of the area before a long day out.
Does the eSIM work on Cambodia's islands?
Partly. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem have signal around the main villages and some beaches, but it varies from beach to beach and can drop out entirely on quieter stretches. If staying connected matters, ask your accommodation about signal before you book.
Which currency should I use in Cambodia?
US dollars for most things, with riel for small change. Hotels, tours, restaurants and tuk-tuks usually quote in dollars, and you'll receive riel for amounts under a dollar. Bring small, clean US notes, as torn or marked bills are often refused.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in Cambodia?
Cambodia is in Zone 2 of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$10 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is one payment for your whole trip.
When does my Cambodia plan start?
When your phone first connects to Smart in Cambodia, not when you buy or install it. Set the eSIM up at home, leave it switched off on the flight, and the days start once you land at Techo or Siem Reap Angkor and connect.
Can I use Grab in Cambodia?
Yes. Grab and the local app PassApp both work in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, letting you book tuk-tuks and cars at a set price without haggling. Both need mobile data, which is one of the main reasons to have the eSIM running from the moment you land.
Can I cross into Thailand or Vietnam on the Cambodia plan?
No, it only works in Cambodia. If your route continues overland to Thailand, Vietnam or Laos, buy a plan for the next country as well, or check whether a regional plan covers every country on your route.
