Network coverage in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico runs on US carrier networks, so coverage is strong and familiar. Your Travelren eSIM connects on T-Mobile — with Liberty and Claro the other strong island-wide networks — delivering 5G across the San Juan metro, Condado, Isla Verde and Old San Juan, and solid 4G LTE along the main coastal highways and through Ponce, Mayagüez and the larger towns. El Yunque National Forest has coverage near the main entrances and visitor centre but drops on the interior trails. The mountainous Cordillera Central spine and the offshore islands of Vieques and Culebra are the weakest spots — expect patchy signal there. For the rainforest trails and the islands, download offline maps before you go; everywhere else along the coast you can expect a fast, reliable connection.

What works in Puerto Rico

✅ Works well

  • Google Maps and Waze for driving the island — a rental car is the normal way to get around
  • Uber across the San Juan metro area
  • WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal and FaceTime over data
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless cards everywhere — it is the US
  • Streaming and video calls on 5G in San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde
  • Ferry and tour booking apps for Vieques and Culebra day trips

⚠️ Watch out for

  • El Yunque rainforest interior trails have weak or no signal — download offline maps before hiking
  • The Cordillera Central mountains and inland towns can drop to slower 4G
  • Vieques and Culebra (the offshore islands) have patchier coverage than the main island
  • Data-only eSIM — no phone number, so you cannot receive local SMS codes (use WhatsApp to stay reachable)

Arriving in Puerto Rico

The gateway is Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, with strong T-Mobile and Liberty coverage throughout. As a US territory, Puerto Rico uses the US dollar, US-style power outlets and the same card and contactless infrastructure as the mainland — Apple Pay, Google Pay and tap-to-pay work virtually everywhere, and foreign Visa/Mastercard/Amex are accepted without trouble. English and Spanish are both widely used. There is no metro for visitors beyond San Juan's limited Tren Urbano; a rental car is effectively essential for seeing the island, and Uber covers the San Juan metro. Importantly, if you are a US traveller your existing AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon plan already covers Puerto Rico as domestic — you do not need a travel eSIM. A Travelren eSIM is for visitors from Australia, the UK, New Zealand and elsewhere who would otherwise pay international roaming.

Installing your Puerto Rico eSIM

1
Install on your home WiFi

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.

2
Land in Puerto Rico

Install your Puerto Rico eSIM at home on WiFi before you fly — it takes about two minutes. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your email. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Leave your home SIM as the primary line for calls and SMS, and switch the Puerto Rico eSIM on for data only when you land at San Juan. Your home number stays active throughout. If you are travelling from the US, you likely don't need this eSIM at all — your domestic plan already covers Puerto Rico.

3
Keep your home SIM for calls

Leave your home SIM in. Set the Puerto Rico eSIM as your data line only. Your number stays active the whole trip.

Common questions

Which carrier does Travelren use in Puerto Rico?
Your eSIM connects on T-Mobile, with Liberty and Claro the other strong island-wide US carrier networks. You get 5G across the San Juan metro and reliable 4G LTE along the coastal highways and main towns. Your phone selects the strongest signal automatically, with no APN setup or manual switching needed.
Do US travellers need a travel eSIM for Puerto Rico?
No. Puerto Rico is a US territory, and AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all include it in domestic plans at no extra roaming charge — your normal US plan just works. A Travelren Puerto Rico eSIM is for visitors from Australia, the UK, New Zealand and elsewhere, who would otherwise be charged international roaming rates by their home carrier.
Is there 5G in Puerto Rico?
Yes. 5G is live across the San Juan metro area, Condado, Isla Verde and Old San Juan, with strong 4G LTE along the main coastal highways and through the larger towns. Coverage thins on the El Yunque interior trails, in the Cordillera Central mountains, and on Vieques and Culebra, so download offline maps before heading into the rainforest or out to the islands.
Does Puerto Rico support eSIM?
Yes. Puerto Rico runs on US carrier networks, all of which support eSIM, and a Travelren eSIM works on any unlocked eSIM-capable phone. iPhones from the XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy models are compatible. One exception: iPhones bought in mainland China lack eSIM hardware even when the model looks identical. Use travelren.com/device-check to confirm your phone. Check my device →
Can I use my eSIM at San Juan Airport?
Yes. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) has strong T-Mobile and Liberty coverage throughout the terminal. Your eSIM activates the moment your phone connects to the network — usually before you reach baggage claim — so you can order an Uber or load directions to your hotel or rental car desk without hunting for airport WiFi.
How much does roaming in Puerto Rico cost without a Travelren eSIM?
For non-US visitors, Puerto Rico is generally billed at US roaming rates. Telstra's International Day Pass is AUD$10 per day, EE charges around £5 per day, and Spark NZ's Roaming Pack works out around NZD$2.14 per day. A Travelren plan is typically cheaper per day. US travellers pay nothing extra — Puerto Rico is included in domestic AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon plans. Check my device →
Will my eSIM work in El Yunque and on Vieques and Culebra?
Near El Yunque's main entrances and visitor centre, yes, but the interior rainforest trails drop to weak or no signal. Vieques and Culebra have coverage in the main settlements but patchier service elsewhere. Download Google Maps offline areas before you hike or take the ferry, and treat the trails and remote island beaches as offline.
Do I need cash in Puerto Rico?
Not much. As a US territory it uses the US dollar and the same card infrastructure as the mainland — Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless work almost everywhere, and foreign cards are accepted without trouble. Carry a little cash for small kiosks, beach vendors and tips, but cards cover the vast majority of spending.
