Network coverage in Austria

Austria has excellent, dense mobile coverage — one of the better-connected countries in the Alps. Your Travelren eSIM routes on Magenta with Drei as a fallback; both run dense 5G across Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Linz and Innsbruck, with A1 the third major network. 4G LTE blankets the rest of the country, including the main valleys, autobahns and the ÖBB rail corridors, and most major ski resorts — St. Anton, Kitzbühel, Sölden, Ischgl, Zell am See — have solid coverage in the village and on the main pistes. The weak spots are the high alpine backcountry, deep side valleys, and hiking routes above the tree line, where signal can drop. For mountain hikes and ski touring off-piste, download offline maps; in the cities and on the rail network you can expect fast, reliable 5G.

What works in Austria

✅ Works well

  • Vienna's WienMobil app and contactless transport — U-Bahn, tram and bus
  • Google Maps, ÖBB and the Austrian rail apps for trains across the country
  • WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal and FaceTime over data
  • Streaming and video calls on 5G in Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck
  • Ski-resort and weather/avalanche apps in the village and on main lifts
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless in cities and larger venues

⚠️ Watch out for

  • High alpine backcountry, deep side valleys and trails above the tree line can have weak or no signal — download offline maps for hiking and ski touring
  • Some small mountain villages and huts (Hütten) rely on WiFi rather than strong mobile data
  • Austria still favours cash in many small cafés, bakeries and rural spots — carry some euro even though data works fine
  • Data-only eSIM — no Austrian number, so you cannot receive local SMS codes (use WhatsApp to stay reachable)

Arriving in Austria

Most visitors arrive at Vienna International Airport (VIE), with Salzburg (SZG) and Innsbruck (INN) serving the west and the ski regions; all have free WiFi and strong Magenta/Drei coverage. Austria uses the euro. It is more cash-oriented than many EU countries — bakeries, small cafés, market stalls and some rural guesthouses still prefer cash, and a few insist on it — so carry euro notes even though Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless cards are accepted in cities, supermarkets and larger restaurants. Bankomat ATMs are everywhere. Public transport is superb and the normal way to get around: Vienna's U-Bahn, trams and buses run on the WienMobil app, and ÖBB intercity and regional trains connect the whole country and the ski valleys. A working eSIM makes mobile tickets, live train times and maps effortless on arrival.

Installing your Austria eSIM

1
Install on your home WiFi

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → scan the QR code from your email. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Takes about two minutes.

2
Land in Austria

Install your Austria eSIM at home on WiFi before you fly — it takes about two minutes. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your email. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Leave your home SIM as the primary line for calls and SMS, and switch the Austria eSIM on for data only when you land at Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck. Your home number stays active throughout. If you forget, all three airports have free WiFi sufficient for a two-minute setup.

3
Keep your home SIM for calls

Leave your home SIM in. Set the Austria eSIM as your data line only. Your number stays active the whole trip.

Common questions

Which carrier does Travelren use in Austria?
Your eSIM routes on Magenta with Drei as a fallback — both run dense 5G across Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Linz and Innsbruck, with strong 4G everywhere else. A1 is the third major Austrian network. Your phone selects the strongest available signal automatically, with no APN setup or manual switching needed.
Is there 5G in Austria?
Yes, extensively. Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Linz and Innsbruck all have dense 5G, and Austria has expanded mid-band 5G heavily in city centres and transport hubs. Outside the cities you get widespread 4G LTE along the valleys, autobahns and rail corridors. Coverage only really thins in the high alpine backcountry and above the tree line, so download offline maps for serious mountain trips.
Will my eSIM work at the ski resorts?
In the resort villages and on the main pistes, yes — St. Anton, Kitzbühel, Sölden, Ischgl and Zell am See all have solid coverage. Off-piste, in the high backcountry and on ski-touring routes above the lifts, signal can drop to nothing. Download offline maps and any avalanche/weather app data before heading out, and don't rely on live data away from the marked runs.
Does Austria support eSIM?
Yes. A1, Magenta and Drei all support eSIM, and a Travelren eSIM works on any unlocked eSIM-capable phone. iPhones from the XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy models are compatible. One exception: iPhones bought in mainland China lack eSIM hardware even when the model looks identical. Use travelren.com/device-check to confirm your phone in 30 seconds. Check my device →
Can I use my eSIM at Vienna Airport?
Yes. Vienna International Airport (VIE) has strong Magenta and Drei coverage throughout the terminal and the CAT/rail link into the city. Your eSIM activates the moment your phone connects to an Austrian network — usually before you reach the train platform — so you can buy a mobile ticket and load directions without waiting for the airport WiFi. The same applies at Salzburg and Innsbruck.
How much does roaming in Austria cost without a Travelren eSIM?
As an EU country, Austria sits in the standard roaming zones. Telstra's International Day Pass is AUD$10 per day, AT&T's International Day Pass is USD$12 per day, EE charges around £2.59 per day under EU pay-as-you-go roaming, and Spark NZ's Roaming Pack works out around NZD$2.14 per day. A Travelren plan is typically cheaper per day and avoids the fixed daily reset. Check my device →
Do I need cash in Austria?
More than in most of Western Europe, yes. Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless cards work in cities, supermarkets and larger restaurants, but bakeries, small cafés, market stalls and some rural and mountain spots still prefer or require cash. Carry some euro notes, and use the widely available Bankomat ATMs to top up. A working eSIM doesn't change the cash habit, but it does make everything else easier.
Can I use my eSIM on Vienna's U-Bahn and trains?
Yes. Vienna's U-Bahn, trams and buses run through the WienMobil app, and ÖBB handles intercity and regional trains — both work smoothly over your eSIM data, including buying and showing mobile tickets. Coverage on the U-Bahn and main rail lines is good. A working connection on arrival makes the whole contactless, app-based transport system effortless.
