Network coverage in Vanuatu

Your Travelren eSIM runs on Digicel, one of Vanuatu's two mobile networks, on 4G. Coverage is good in Port Vila and along much of the road around Efate, and in Luganville and along much of Espiritu Santo's east coast.

On the outer islands it varies a lot: Tanna has signal around Lenakel and in parts of the island, but coverage near Mount Yasur and in remote villages is patchy, and smaller islands may have little or none. For island-hopping trips, treat the eSIM as your connection in Port Vila and Santo and plan to be offline elsewhere. Vanuatu plans need their APN entered by hand as wbdata, so do that straight after installing.

What works in Vanuatu

Works well

  • WhatsApp and Messenger with guesthouses, tour operators and drivers
  • Google Maps around Port Vila and on the Efate ring road
  • Checking domestic flight times, which can change at short notice
Show 2 more
  • Card payments and banking in Port Vila and Luganville
  • Sharing photos from the Blue Holes, Mele Cascades and Champagne Beach

Watch out for

  • The APN has to be set by hand to wbdata
  • Patchy or no coverage on many outer islands
  • Data only: no Vanuatu number

Arriving in Vanuatu

International flights land at Bauerfield International (VLI) in Port Vila, on Efate, with Pekoa (SON) at Luganville serving Santo. Vanuatu uses the vatu (VUV).

Resorts, larger restaurants and supermarkets in Port Vila and Luganville take cards, but buses, taxis, markets, village visits and almost anything on the outer islands need cash, and ATMs are found mainly in the two towns. Port Vila's minibuses, marked with a B on the number plate, stop anywhere on request and charge a flat fare. Cruise ships call at Port Vila, so the town can be busy on ship days. Flights to Tanna, Santo and the other islands are small and weather-dependent, so keep a buffer day before an international departure.

Installing your Vanuatu eSIM

Install your Vanuatu eSIM before you fly, on WiFi: scan the QR code from your order email in Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM on iPhone, or the SIM manager on Android. Next, set the APN to wbdata in that line's mobile data network settings, as Vanuatu plans don't configure it automatically. When you arrive at Bauerfield, choose the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for it.

If data doesn't start, double-check the APN and restart the phone.

Common questions

Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in Vanuatu?

Digicel, on 4G. It's one of Vanuatu's two networks, with good coverage in Port Vila, around Efate and in Luganville. You'll need to set the APN to wbdata by hand after installing, which takes about a minute.

How do I set the APN for Vanuatu?

On iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, select the Vanuatu eSIM, Mobile Data Network, then type wbdata in the APN field. On Android: open the eSIM's Access Point Names, add a new APN and enter wbdata. Save and select it, and restart the phone if data doesn't start straight away.

Will I have signal on Tanna and at Mount Yasur?

Around Lenakel and some villages, yes, but coverage on Tanna is uneven, and near the volcano and in remote areas it can be weak or absent. Your tour operator or bungalow host will know where signal is strongest. Download maps and save bookings before you fly from Port Vila.

How much does Telstra charge to roam in Vanuatu?

Vanuatu is in Zone 1, the lower-priced zone of Telstra's International Day Pass: A$5 a day with 2 GB of data a day, checked September 2026. AT&T's International Day Pass is US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is one payment for the whole trip.

When does my Vanuatu plan start?

When your phone first connects to a network in Vanuatu. Installing the eSIM at home beforehand doesn't start it, so you can set it up, enter the APN, and the plan's days begin when you land at Bauerfield.

Do I need cash in Vanuatu?

Yes. Cards work in resorts, larger restaurants and supermarkets in Port Vila and Luganville, but buses, markets, village visits and outer-island stays are cash in vatu. ATMs are mainly in the two towns, so withdraw before flying to other islands.

Is the eSIM worth it for a cruise stop in Port Vila?

Yes, for the day ashore. Once your phone connects to Digicel in port, you have data for maps, messaging and photos without paying for ship WiFi or your home carrier's roaming. The plan's days start from that first connection, so the shortest plan suits a single stop.

Is 4G fast enough in Vanuatu?

In Port Vila and Luganville, yes, for video calls, streaming and photo uploads. Speeds drop and signal comes and goes further out, so on the outer islands messages are more dependable than video.
