Network coverage in the Dominican Republic
Your Travelren eSIM runs on Altice, one of the Dominican Republic's two main networks, on 4G. Coverage is good in Santo Domingo, including the Zona Colonial, and across the resort areas of Punta Cana, Bávaro, Cap Cana, La Romana, Puerto Plata and Sosúa.

On the Samaná peninsula, Las Terrenas and Samaná town are covered, with gaps on the way to the remoter beaches. Inland, the mountains of the Cordillera Central around Jarabacoa and Constanza and the far south-west towards Pedernales are patchier. Resort WiFi is common, but it often doesn't reach the beach or come with you on excursions, which is where your own data helps.

Arriving in the Dominican Republic
Most visitors fly into Punta Cana (PUJ) or Santo Domingo's Las Américas (SDQ), with Puerto Plata (POP) and Santiago (STI) serving the north. Every traveller has to complete the free online E-Ticket entry and exit form.

The currency is the Dominican peso (DOP), though US dollars are widely accepted in resort areas, often at a poor rate. Resorts and larger restaurants take cards; taxis, colmados (corner shops), street food and tips are cash. Taxis in the resort zones charge fixed rates by destination, so confirm the fare before you get in. Most visitors stay in all-inclusive resorts and book excursions through them or through operators found on WhatsApp.
Installing your Dominican Republic eSIM
Install the Dominican Republic eSIM at home on WiFi, scanning the QR code from your order email (iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM; Android: Settings, SIM manager, Add eSIM). No APN setup is needed. On arrival, make the eSIM your mobile data line and switch on data roaming for it.

Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts if you need them, with its roaming off to avoid charges.
Common questions
Which network does the Travelren eSIM use in the Dominican Republic?
Altice, on 4G. It's one of the country's two main networks, with good coverage in Santo Domingo and the resort areas. The APN sets itself, so once data roaming is on for the eSIM line, it connects automatically.
Will my eSIM work in Punta Cana?
Yes. Punta Cana, Bávaro and Cap Cana have good 4G coverage, including most resorts and beaches. It's handy for messaging excursion operators and sharing photos from places the resort WiFi doesn't reach.
Does Telstra's International Day Pass cover the Dominican Republic?
No. The Dominican Republic isn't on Telstra's International Day Pass list, checked September 2026, so Telstra customers pay standard roaming rates. AT&T's International Day Pass includes it at US$12 a day. A Travelren plan is one price for your trip.
When does my Dominican Republic plan start?
When your phone first connects to a network in the Dominican Republic. Installing the eSIM early doesn't use any of the plan's days, so you can set it up at home and it starts when you land in Punta Cana or Santo Domingo.

Will I have signal on a trip to Saona Island?
Some, but coverage on the island and at sea can be patchy. Download anything you need beforehand and expect to catch up on messages once you're back on the mainland.
Should I pay in pesos or dollars?
Pesos usually give you the better deal. US dollars are accepted in resort areas, but prices converted on the spot are often rounded against you. Cards work in resorts and larger restaurants; carry pesos for taxis, colmados and tips.
Can I use WhatsApp to contact businesses there?
Yes, it's the standard way to reach tour operators, restaurants, drivers and many hotels. WhatsApp messages and calls run over the eSIM's data connection, so you can reach them without roaming charges on your home number.
Is it worth having data if my resort has free WiFi?
Often, yes. Resort WiFi tends to cover the lobby and rooms but not always the beach, pool or excursions, and it doesn't help in taxis or on day trips. Your own data works anywhere Altice has signal.
