Do I Need a VPN in Vietnam 2026? What's Blocked and How to Access It
Vietnam is not China. That's the first thing to understand. Vietnam does restrict some internet content, but the restrictions are narrower and less consistently enforced. Most apps and websites you use as an Australian tourist work fine in Vietnam without any workaround.
Here's what's actually blocked, what works, and whether you need a VPN.
The short answer
Most tourists don't need a VPN in Vietnam. WhatsApp, Google, Instagram, YouTube, and Gmail all work. Facebook works most of the time. The only reasons you'd need a VPN: accessing your Australian Netflix library, or if Facebook is temporarily restricted during your visit.

What's sometimes restricted
Facebook's relationship with Vietnam is complicated. The Vietnamese government has pressured Facebook to comply with content moderation requests. Facebook has been intermittently slowed or restricted, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
In practice, Facebook usually works on mobile data. Hotel and cafe Wi-Fi can be more restrictive because ISPs sometimes apply blocks that mobile carriers don't. If Facebook isn't loading on Wi-Fi, switch to your eSIM's mobile data.
Some news websites
Certain international news outlets are occasionally blocked, particularly those covering Vietnamese politics. BBC, CNN, and most major English language news sites generally work, but specific articles or smaller outlets may be restricted.

China blocks everything and requires a VPN or international eSIM as a workaround. Vietnam blocks very little and most tourists never notice a restriction.
When you might want a VPN
A VPN is optional for Vietnam, but useful in a few scenarios:
Australian streaming content. Netflix shows a different library in Vietnam. If you want your Australian Netflix, Stan, or ABC iView, connect to a VPN with an Australian server. This isn't a Vietnam restriction; Netflix does this everywhere outside Australia.
Facebook not loading. If Facebook is restricted during your visit, a VPN bypasses the block. This is intermittent, not permanent, so you may not need it at all.
Extra privacy on public Wi-Fi. Vietnam has lots of free Wi-Fi at cafes and hotels. A VPN encrypts your traffic on these networks. This is a general security practice, not Vietnam specific.
VPN vs travel eSIM: what's the difference?
This is where people get confused. They serve different purposes:
A VPN encrypts your connection and routes it through a server in another country. It can bypass website blocks and change your apparent location. But it needs an existing internet connection to work. A VPN without data is useless.
A travel eSIM gives you the internet connection itself: mobile data. In countries like China, some travel eSIMs route through international servers, which has the side effect of bypassing restrictions. In Vietnam, this isn't necessary because most things aren't blocked.
