eSIM Not Working? How to Fix Common Problems (2026)
You installed an eSIM and something is not right. Maybe it says "No Service," maybe data is not working, or maybe the QR code would not scan. Most eSIM problems have a simple fix that takes under 60 seconds.
This guide covers every common issue and walks you through the fix step by step.
Problem 1: eSIM installed but no data
This is the most common issue. The eSIM installed successfully but you have no internet connection. Almost always, one of three settings is wrong.
Check that the eSIM is your default data line
- Go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > SIM manager (Samsung)
- Tap Cellular Data or Mobile Data
- Select the eSIM plan as your data source
Turn on data roaming for the eSIM
- Go to Settings > Cellular
- Tap the eSIM plan name
- Toggle Data Roaming to on
This is required for travel eSIMs even though it sounds like it would incur charges. Travel eSIMs use data roaming technically, but you are only charged for the plan you already paid for.
Toggle airplane mode
- Turn on airplane mode
- Wait 10 seconds
- Turn off airplane mode
This forces your phone to search for networks again and often resolves connectivity issues immediately.
Restart your phone. A full power cycle clears temporary network glitches that toggling airplane mode sometimes misses.
Problem 2: eSIM says "No Service"
"No Service" means your phone is not connected to any network on the eSIM line. Common causes:
- You have not arrived yet. Most travel eSIMs only activate when you reach the destination country. They will show "No Service" until then. This is normal.
- The eSIM line is turned off. Go to Settings > Cellular, tap the eSIM, and make sure "Turn On This Line" is enabled.
- Network selection is set to manual. Go to Settings > Cellular > eSIM plan > Network Selection and set it to Automatic.
If you have arrived at your destination and the eSIM still shows "No Service" after checking the above, try selecting the network manually:
- Go to Settings > Cellular > eSIM > Network Selection
- Turn off Automatic
- Wait for available networks to appear
- Select one of the listed operators
- If it connects, switch back to Automatic
Problem 3: QR code will not scan
If the QR code is not scanning when you try to install the eSIM:
- Make sure you are on Wi-Fi or mobile data. Your phone needs internet to download the eSIM profile after scanning
- Use good lighting. A blurry or poorly lit QR code will not scan
- Try entering the code manually. Most eSIM providers include a manual activation code alongside the QR code. Look for "SM-DP+ address" and "activation code" in your email
- Do not scan from the same device. If the QR code is on your phone, you cannot scan it with the same phone's camera. Open the email on a computer or another device and scan from there
Problem 4: "eSIM cannot be added" or "Unable to install"
This error usually means one of three things:
- Your phone does not support eSIM. Check our compatible phones list to confirm
- Your phone is carrier locked. Some phones purchased on a plan are locked to the carrier until paid off. Contact your carrier to unlock it
- You have reached the eSIM limit. Most iPhones support 8 to 10 eSIM profiles. If you have hit the limit, delete an old unused eSIM from Settings > Cellular
Problem 5: eSIM data is slow
If the eSIM is connected but speeds are unusable:
- Check your data balance. If you have used all your data, speeds will be throttled or cut off entirely. Top up or buy a new plan
- Check network selection. Your phone may have connected to a weak or congested network. Go to Settings > Network Selection, switch to manual, pick a different operator, then switch back to automatic
- Move locations. Indoor areas, basements, and rural zones often have weaker signal. Step outside or move to a different spot
- Check for APN settings. Some eSIMs require specific Access Point Name settings. Check the setup instructions from your provider
Problem 6: eSIM stopped working mid trip
If the eSIM was working and suddenly stopped:
- Check your data balance. The most common reason is you have run out of data
- Check the validity period. If your plan has expired (for example, a 7 day plan on day 8), it will stop working
- Toggle airplane mode on and off
- Restart your phone
- If none of the above work, contact your eSIM provider
Quick reference: the 60 second fix checklist
1. Is the eSIM set as your default data line?
2. Is data roaming turned on for the eSIM?
3. Is the eSIM line turned on?
4. Is network selection set to Automatic?
5. Have you toggled airplane mode?
6. Have you restarted your phone?
If all six are checked and it still does not work, contact your provider.
